Middlesbrough accuse Garry Monk of shady transfer dealings with agent as bombshell report released
Incredible developments have emerged over former Middlesbrough manager Garry Monk’s involvement in a number of transfers while he was at the Teeside club, with Boro chairman Steve Gibson accusing him and his agent James Featherstone of not protecting the business interests of the club.
A bombshell report by the Daily Mail revealed the former Leeds and Birmingham City manager had allegedly been working with his agent tobenefit financially from the transfers of Cyrus Christie, Ashley Fletcher, Ryan Shotton and Marvin Johnson.
The claim comes not long after Birmingham City sacked Monk — with chief executive Xuandong Ren not wanting agent Featherstone, or Monk himself, involved in the club’s transfer deals.
The first instance of the shady dealings occurred when Middlesbrough discovered Featherstone had got in touch with Derby in regards to purchasing Christie within a day of Monk deciding he wanted to sign the player.
Boro believed that Monk had a duty as manager that he should not be sharing information about their transfer targets — especially to his agent.
Featherstone got involved by asking for a five per cent cut in order to push through the Christie transfer, and despite Boro valueing the right back at $3m, they ended up signing Christie for $4m.
The shady dealings didn’t stop there either.
Boro claim another instance of these insider dealings occurred when Ashley Fletcher signed for Middlesbrough from West Ham in 2017 for $12m.
On paper, it might seem like a normal transfer. However when Monk was Leeds manager, he had the option to sign him for just $5m — the player’s value had somehow doubled in less than six months.
More damning evidence came to light after it was revealed Fletcher’s father was also contacted by Featherstone who was asking to be involved in the deal.
Upon catching wind of this, a Boro official warned Featherstone to never contact the father again.
RUMOUR MILL: Utd’s $627k-a-week ultimatum, Arsenal lead race to sign Real star
Despie numerous cautions, it appeared Featherstone couldn’t help himself once again.
The third instance came when the agent asked to be included in the Ryan Shotton deal between Boro and Birmingham City.
Despite the recruitment staff putting other players forward as options, Monk bizarrely insisted on Shotton despite Featherstone not being his agent.
Remarkably, Shotton only started one league game in September 2017 — and Monk was subsequently sacked less than three months later.
The allegations made against Monk and Featherstone are serious with Boro believing the duo worked together to harm the club unlawfully — it was even in Monk’s contract to operate in the best business interests of the club.
This belief was strengthened by the fact that upon Monk’s sacking, the hard drive of his company laptop had been completely wiped.
Featherstone responded to the claims on Thursday, stating: “we received these allegations almost a year ago and following a strong rebuttal of all allegations, have heard nothing further from the club and there have been no regulatory breaches nor any court action taken.”
“The club were always, and still are, fully aware at all times of all transfer dealings. No business was conducted without Middlesbrough’s authority.”
This ordeal will be costly for both sides, but it remains to be seen what kind of outcome will be reached.

I simply refuse to accept that managers or agents, are in anyway corrupt.

Let's be fair if the ruling bodies knew they would have brought in tight regulations to stop any such under hand dealings

Must be on a US site, the Times link above is in GBP. Also, I'm not sure I get what he's alleged to have done.

Middlesbrough’s concerns were increased by the nature of the negotiations during that summer over Christie, the Ireland full back, whom Monk had demanded they sign after the collapse of a proposed move for another defender. The club initially offered £1.75 million for Christie on July 4, which was rejected, with Derby coming back with a counter proposal requesting £2.9 million the next day, before they compromised on a £2.25 million deal two days later.
That's how these things work, surely?

Exactly, it couldn't possibly be happening here either.

I remember Cameron Toshack playing for us in c1990. He'd previously been on the books of Swansea and Bristol City. The rumour was that his dad, John Toshack , was allegedly paying his wages whilst at City. He did out later on to be a very highly rated coach and was at Swansea last I heard. Didn't do much with us though, I think he had one start and four sub appearances before going to Weymouth where he old played 6 times. Mind you, if we'd signed a young Frank Lampard he'd probably be playing Welsh League football within two years!
