    Enjoy the cricket but...
Grown men doing that 4 run wavy hand thingy, they look absolute dickheads, don't they realise their families may be watching

Enjoying this. I am at work so following on cricinfo, and the BBC live text coverage. One thing that puzzles me though... on the BBC thing, each comment comes with the option to like or dislike. Who the f**k is clicking on those buttons? 248 people have hit "like" on the news that it is a drinks break. Why?! And how on earth could 16 more "dislike" that particular piece of information?! bonkers stuff.

I'd add that very overrated batsman Bairstow as well.

If England can eke out another twenty five runs I'd say that would be a significant lead, but it looks like Lyon is going to become more influential as the game goes on - Moeen, needs to produce with the ball later on today.

To be fair, England proved me wrong with their batting yesterday - especially Rory Burns. After failing twice against Ireland, it wouldn't have surprised at all if he had been dropped. As he admits himself, you'd never teach kids to bat like he does and the thing with players like that is that less patience is shown towards them compared to classically elegant players (watch people tear into Steve Smith's method once he starts to struggle) - it was proper test batting by Burns, Root and Stokes yesterday and I'd started to think this England team was incapable of that.

Bairstow isn’t exempt from criticism, flashing wildly at a ball when he needed to get his head down and bat for a few hours! However, Ali leaving a ball like that makes him looks timid and completely out of sorts ! clearly Lyon has him sussed which is so annoying as he can do so much more with the bat !

I think Moeen was originally selected as a batsman who could bowl, but now it's his bowling that it is keeping him in the team. I'd just stick him at number eight from now on and hope he can contribute with the bat now and again - Bairstow is different for me, he is still thought of as a specialist batsman, but he is far too loose currently to be that.

    Jason Roy

Could have cost England the game with his impatience.

Quintessential white ball player right there

Both are in grave danger of losing their places. Bairstow will survive the series but Ali has to be dropped. His moon balls yesterday were embarrassing.

Daft but Roy has something. Also, you can't let Lyon just settle or it will be a long day for the batsmen, while also being very short for everyone else! I can't believe he's danced down though

No doubt Roy has something but in test cricket, and in the position England are in, you have to apply yourself and dig in.
He had made his mind up what he was going to do before the ball left Lyon's hand, instead of playing the ball on merit. He didn't even get to the pitch of the ball.

Denly reviewing was an even worse decision!

Looks like they might need "sir Ben" yet again to get the draw.

I wonder what odds and who had money on Aus to win at 120 odd for 8 on the first day. I bet somebody had money on it.

Root has gone now ! ...... Lyon showing the difference of having a spin bowler in form ! Ali has had a stinker of a test so far but maybe he will be needed some time this afternoon to save the test !

To think they had Australia 122-8 on first day and let them make 284 ! And then had a mini collapse from 279-4 to only finish 90 runs ahead. They only have themselves to blame !

While Smith is there, Australia will be odds on to win every test. It's a joke how well he's playing. Roy shouldn't have played that shot but you probably need to be aggressive or you'll get a ball with your name on it from Lyon.

    Re: Ashes First Test

I've never liked Smith - don't like the way he bats and didn't like the obnoxious behaviour of the Aussie team he captained (the real measure of how bad they had got is that I don't think any genuine cricket fan could have been the least bit surprised when the ball tampering story broke), but, I don't think I've ever seen anyone make batting look as easy as he did when he came in, with his team, seemingly, on their way to defeat, in a very tense situation on Saturday. Moeen Ali had turned his second ball a long way to all but bowl Bancroft and then got him out in his next over - he was the potential match winning bowler for England, but Smith was toying with him from the start and is now dominating him to the extent that he will, almost certainly, be dropped after this match with his bowling, and batting, confidence absolutely shot.

Second best ever to Bradman? On the evidence of this match, Smith may just be that.

Smith has no obvious weakness. He's played 65 tests and nobody has a clue how to get him out. Smith's Australia, especially with Warner, were very easy to dislike. I did enjoy Australia thinking they were the "good guys" and moral guardians of world cricket. That was hilarious.
