    Ashes - 3rd Test

Not going well for England 142-6

Although Australia were 124-8 in the first test...

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

When you consider that Smith is guaranteed to make a century, it's a very bad start

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

Just to update this thrilling thread, England have got Australia on 75-4 at the moment

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

If Smith is still in the wicket count is almost irrelevant

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

    Grandstand finish on.
England need 4 wkts in min 6 overs.
    They couldn't could they?

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

No more Archer too dark to bowl, 4 overs of spin

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

Roy dropping a regulation slip catch off Head is going to make all the difference I reckon.

I know exactly where you are coming from and to many the game seems ludicrous.
A game that goes on for 5 days and ends in a draw.

Test match cricket though is the best form of cricket and although many games can be pretty boring affairs in terms of dot balls, few boundaries or not getting a result, there is always something that will have you sat in your chair watching it for hours.

Take Steve Smith. Rightly booed IMO every time he touches the ball for doing the worst act possible in cricket, blatant cheating. Not just bending the rules a bit, the worst cardinal sin possible.
Blatant cheating at cricket. It's just not done.

Yet the man is head and shoulders the best batsman around and carried his country to victory single handedly in the first test.
You have to admire the man's ability, thick skin and self belief.

This test will be remembered, maybe not for the drama of Botham's Headingly test innings in 81 or Bob Willie's scintillating spell in the same match, but considering it was rain spoiled for 2 days, this one was very nearly as dramatic.
Had Roy taken the relatively simple slip catch of Stokes TOBW mentioned, it would have been up there with it no question.

At the start of the day, a draw was probably the best that many England players and fans could hope for but then in comes someone, Stokes (again not many people's favourite person), who turns the game on its head with a cavalier innings and England go very close to squaring the series.

Test match cricket, particularly England v Australia. You just can't beat it

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

My missus can't believe that I've sat In front of the telly the whole weekend watching the cricket. Considering that was Jofra Archers first test, his introduction has been a thunderbolt to test cricket. After his spell against Steve Smith on Saturday, when he laid out Liebfraumilch ( I couldn't spell his name when he was playing for Glamorgan), you could see that the Aussies are quaking in their boots.

And I said it after the World Cup win, that if I was a youngster I'd want to be Ben Stokes, that hasn't changed a bit. An outstanding knock again yesterday. I disagree with his innings being described as cavalier by a previous poster. It was a defensive masterclass, until England felt safe and then he went ballistic.

And the other huge bonus of watching a full weekends cricket, was I didn't watch more than 10 minutes of that crap performance at Reading.

You look at how little bowling Ben Stokes did in the game and you start to think that, increasingly, in this so brittle line up, he is being seen as a specialist batsman - although he has his mad one day moments in test cricket, he is as solid as any batsman England has when it comes to his defensive technique.

Watching Archer bowl has been an overdue reminder that genuine quick bowling has, largely, gone out of the game in the last twenty years or so and, consequently, that can only increase the impact he is having - now the momentum is with England after they were largely outplayed for the first one and a half tests.

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

I cant wait to see Archer bowl in Perth.

Smith v Archer 2 is going to be interesting.

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

Archer isn't likely to be hitting the wickets too often, especially at Perth. Plenty of Aussies but not the wickets.

Everyone happy with the claim of a catch by the England captain?

Not really, there were two shots of the incident which offered very contrasting views of the legitimacy of the "catch" and so I suppose the soft signal of out meant that the third umpire's decision could be justified, but it seemed to me that the view which suggested not out was a lot more clear cut than the one which said out.

    Tim Paine is happy.

Probably deserves a new thread as it's the 3rd test but anyway, 26 for 3.
    179 looking a good score?
They have got Aus where they needed them but blowing it.

Looks like Stokes is going to have to play the Steve Smith role for England again.

    Jason Roy another failure

Surely he can't keep his place opening.

What's going on with Root at the moment as well.

It could get interesting if England can make a game of it from here and then chase a decent target in the second innings. Still hoping!

Poor from stokes there. All out by lunch?

Dreadful shot. One which again sums up the players' application to the game.

Most just cannot differentiate between limited overs and Test cricket.

    Re: Ashes 2nd Test

    Another poorly executed shot.
    45 for 5!
