'Fittest 55-year-old' Nigel Benn to make boxing comeback

Nigel Benn has been described as the "fittest 55-year-old on planet Earth" as he prepares for a shock ring return.

The ex-world champion has not fought professionally since November 1996 but will resume his career on 23 November, according to his promoter Mark Peters.

"I wouldn't support Nigel if I didn't believe he was fit to box," he added.

The British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoc) is against the fight, which will be sanctioned by the rival British and Irish Boxing Authority (Biba).

Benn - whose last fight was a defeat by Irishman Steve Collins 23 years ago - has passed all Biba's medical tests, while there will be a specialist in head trauma and a portable brain scanner available at ringside on fight night

Loved watching Benn fight in his prime, him, Eubank, Watson , a awesome time for Boxing that

I met Nigel once, he was DJ'ing at the Hippo club many years ago and we bumped into him in a bar, seemed a ok bloke, good DJ set aswell imho

Last i heard he was living in Sydney and fairly involved in charity work

BUT, as 55, is it too old ? ? ? ? too dangerous ? ? ? looks in good shape, but 55, i dont know

Disgraceful that this is getting sanctioned. He's 55 for God's sake.

Apparently the Boxing Board of control have not sanctioned it but this is boxing and he will no doubt get his wish under some other made up ruling body.

Apparently "the fittest 55 year old in the world".

You would have though that after what happened to his old adversary Michael Watson he would have more sense and as such, one would really have to question his mental state to even contemplate getting in with a 40 year old.

You would think he had more sense at his age. He must be desperate for money.

Apparently not, just built a 10 bedroom house in Australia. More likely desperate for the buzz

There have been 50+ year old men on here trying to make arrangements to meet up for a fight, without any pay involved

The fittest 55-year-old according to whom? Someone that stands to gain from the fight?

    Who's he fighting?

An embarrassment. He was well past his best by the time he hung up his gloves. His last fight was bad enough over 20 years ago.

At his age I would recommend a hearing aid. A faulty one.

Strange time to come back to it, would have thought if it was about the buzz of it all he would have returned two, three years after retiring, maybe even 10 years.

But 23 years later? Was 23 when he turned pro.

Sad really back in his heyday the sport had some great times and fighters certainly around the middle / light weights division , I know this wont be popular but the heavyweights were turned into a circus event long time ago, post Ali and because of him and his media circus antics .

That sounds like a title of a book about that Niasse bloke we had from Everton last season.

    He’s just as loopy.

Think that happened a while ago now. Surprised more non-boxers haven't gone down the McGregor route.

Now there's an interesting man Eubanks because of his continuous problems of expulsion from school in the UK for fighting ,was sent as a 16 year old to live with him mum im the Bronx NYC where he was schooled in some very tough boxing gyms.

Imagine the outcry on here if Greta Thunberg was described as ”loopy” 😂
At the end of the day if Benn wants to fight again then it’s his decision. The mugs are the ones who’ll actually watch it.

Greta Thunberg has Aspergers Syndrome, so calling her loopy would allude derogatively to what is classed as a disability and therefore a pretty shitty thing to do, especially to a 16 year old.

Chris Eubank is just a bit eccentric and plays up to that character for media purposes so the word loopy doesn't have the same connotations and aggressiveness.

Hope that helps. This stuff isn't hard, you get an instinctive feel for it if you've been brought up right.

When the ageing George Foreman was fighting past his sell by date, he was asked if there should be a compulsory age of retirement for boxers, to which he replied 'Yeah, 64'.

Where’s the connection? Calling a young kid with Aspergers names probably isn’t seen as the done thing. Calling some self proclaimed eccentric loopy is harmless how?

Are you following me around you weirdo.
It was tongue in cheek, hence the laughing smiley.
    Now do one you gimp.
