Before China opened up has it has done in the last twenty five years I decided to take two mates to Hong Kong and get into China on a migrant workers' night boat (fitted out with hundreds of bunks in one communal space) up the Pearl River and up to Guangzhou (Canton). There were no tourists on it and we didn't come across any tourists in the five days we spend in China. We purchased all the beer on board and watched the night go by from up on the deck. It was all very spooky and we kept our fingers crossed that our visas wouldn't be questioned - we were all cartographers with the Ministry of Defence but we obfuscated the name of our employer on the visa application and changed our job titles from 'Mapping and Charting Officer' to 'Matting and Carpeting Officers'.
I know a painter who used to roll out of his bed with his Mrs when they were doing some damage as he always preferred a Matt finish!
