I wouldn't care if it was twice as expensive to keep them in prison. I would absolutely not want to live in a country where the government were prepared to execute people to save the equivalent of loose change.

This is something National Heath Service has to do - you've heard of NICE. They don't execute people but they decide who to keep alive. It can't be avoided.
