If this is the cost of Cardiff alone ,what cost the total cost are for taxpayers across the UK
Cardiff Uni takes the piss. My son is doing a History degree and has something like 4 hours of lectures a week. His summer term ended in April although he did have three days in May where he went back to Cardiff for exams. He did not go back until the start of October for his final year. So how they can justify fees of £9000 a year is beyond me.

I would say a phd makes things easier for you but is not quite essential.
My next move up the ladder will be associate prof, which I can get without a phd (I don’t have one), however I will need to hit a certain target on 3&4 star publications and grant income.

Professors here are paid $150,000 a year as a basic and they can earn more depending on what managerial type roles they take on.
The Vice chancellor earns just under $1 million per year plus bonus

This in the world wide Academic community is not unusual.

In the UK however good salaries paid to some excellent academics is not very common and when published invites all kind of judgements and comparisons being made

It has been estimated that my institution contributes over $5 billion dollars to the economy of Australia per year. And in addition provides employment for thousands of support type roles which do not require any high level qualifications.

    It’s a different game altogether
So a little under £80k as a basic then- and that is with GBP at something of a low at present.

Glassdoor tells us that professors at Cardiff earn between high 60s and 102k, average £77k. Sounds similar to your uni.

This all makes sense but none of it is consistent with the idea that there are over 250 academic staff on £100k+. It is surely the medical staff affecting this.

In the US a PhD is essential.

We use US $ because it allows for fair and consistent comparisons to be made between different business and operating areas

All the deans, associate deans and top profs in their fields probably get £100k+. The numbers appear about right. But I reiterate, that's low for a globally competitive university.

There is a school of thought which considers a PhD to be a training program for researchers
Some institutions prefer a PhD from a research led university

I know that in the UK there were a number of well thought of Professors who didn’t have a PhD but who were pretty well pushed into getting one for various reasons. The jump in numbers of PhD by publication may account for a fair proportion

Personally I think that as in any profession you follow the organisation rules if you want to progress and if you are mobile and can tick the boxes you can move upwards fairly rapidly If that’s what you want

    If you don’t have a
That option has been discussed. It’s just a matter of being able to fit it in between teaching, research, and administrative stuff.

Brought about by the Welsh Government cutting millions of pounds of funding midway through a financial year a few years back.

Not sure what your agenda is here but if Cardiff University were to start to fail then Cardiff as a city would be in deep shit. Every overseas student attracted here pays fees of around £20k per annum before they then rent accommodation in the city and spend money here.

Given the global investment in Higher Education by China and other countries in recent years for Cardiff to be doing as well as it is on the global stage is nothing short of miraculous. However Brexit may just prove a hurdle too much to overcome as many important overseas staff have already left.

If you want to know what the return on investment is then this report should help:
