Thread: Free Broadband - latest insane policy from Labour

Free Broadband - latest insane policy from Labour

In the wonderful whacky world proposed by Corby there'll be free nationalised broadband to while away your extra free time during the reduced working week .
Ignoring the fact that it'll actually have to be paid for by some poor bugger, and that it's a bit strange to provide free broadband when you're making people pay for water, has it occurred to anyone that this would mean that they'd control what people could or couldn't see or say on the Internet ?

Another brilliant idea from JC and the lads. He's going to be a breath of fresh air when he usurps the establishment con men.

I agree. Stupid idea. Will have a massive impact on my business (ie might not have one anymore) and what about the punters who work for all these organisations, what will happen to their jobs?

Looks like a spoilt ballot paper for me this time....

The internet has already killed many jobs and businesses, as it is a disruptive technology. Making it "free" to the end user is not necessarily a bad thing, as it could make the country more competitive in the long-term.

Won't the company(ies) providing the services still need staff? Surely only 'sales' positions would be affected (Not that I believe for a second that this policy will ever come to fruition and I'm not entirely sure of the benefits of it).

BT shares crash = job loss or workers wage impact v by the time its deployed broadband is defunct as 5g is all around and youngsters will be all about on devices , not using static broadband .

I have a sales franchise with a company that provides Gas, Ele, Broadband, Homephone and Mobile services.

It’s got me out of debt which sadly cost me a previous employment (couldn’t go back with a dreadful credit score due to taking out a consolidated loan with First plus)

I’m hoping to go back to college best year to do a PGCE and this business is funding it but if Labour win and this occurs then chances are business will suffer.

I’ll admit I may get called selfish but I think we all look after our own interests, I’ve been able to pay more tax due to this line of work due to increased income.

So fhechoice is Brexit or utility privatisation. Which from my point of view is depressing hence my likely decision to abstain now.

I agree that the government being in control of your internet usage would be a bad thing. Any idea if it would be a hand-on or hands-off scenario?

I reckon we should have an election every year, all this investment both parties are promising to spend, a win win for the public.

Not selfish and not uncommon either that people base their vote on things that affect them, all I would say is consider the full picture which I am sure you will be.

We are lagging behind almost every comparable country on accessibility to fibre internet. One unfortunately side effect of privatisation is that something needs to be profitable to be worth delivering. Governments can afford to look at the bigger picture and ultimately be more equitable.

They can't though Eric. Since it first occurred to the Ancient Romans to import grain from Egypt and hand it out free to the Plebs,( the Dole), such ideas have sometimes achieved a short term aim for transient rulers ,but ended in total ****ing disaster a little way down the line. Following Marx , socialism and Nazism took the idea to new levels of lunacy and the result was even worse.
They don't want to help anyone , they want to control them because they'll be indebted to the state, and in the end the state isn't capable of sustaining it because it just spends without creating anything.
Once they've spent everything there are unprecedented shortages and deprivation.

    - just watching Corby exposing his scheme, and I'm afraid he's clearly ****ing mental .

This isn't about handouts. This is about creating whole-uk infrastructure that is relevant in the 21st century. If the policy were focussed around providing universal clean water, electricity or transport links to rural parts of the uk then we wouldn't be having this conversation.

The Boris alternative appears to be chuck 5 billion into the air and see what happens.

If anybody is interested in reading about the possible alternatives and their strengths and weaknesses then this is a good place to start.

Very interesting, however why would you dig up endless roads in rural areas when 5g will deliver that service .

Our problem with broadband is not in the cities its the rurals so I can, t see why we would invest so much money in a technology that maybe superceed.

Lets be fair this is just another headline grabber.

Just concentrate on real needs social care , NHS, school's, policing, transport ,and environment, anything else isca vanity project and media bait.
