Thread: Votes at 16

    Votes at 16

Will we ever get there? Universally supported now with the exception of one party. Personally I think 16 year old's are mature enough to value/respect their vote and it is probably about time this happened.

They have shown exceptional skills voting for out of the jungle , love island and x factor candidates, great grasp on reality , so hey why not .

The only reason this issue has resurfaced is down to Remainers. It is widely assumed that the younger voters would support remain whilst us old codgers support Brexit, hence reversing the referendum result.

Typical of politicians who'd agree to anything for short term political benefits, but patently ridiculous.
Do they intend to lower the age for drinking, signing contracts, driving, marriage and active service in the forces for the new child voters ?

I’d say most 16 year old young adults would have better grammar though.

Refreshing. At least when LOM is blaming you for being used and abused by a paedophile ring he will also allow you to vote in a general election. Fair is fair

Why do you drag things in from other threads that have nothing to do with the subject? that kind of gaslighting is really bad

Judging by the daily interviews with members of the public by TV and radio stations I would say that most people shouldn't have the vote. The grasp of important political matters by most people seems noticeable by its absence.

    Re: Votes at 16

When you are 16 you are allowed to:

Get married or register a civil partnership with consent
Drive a moped or invalid carriage
You can consent to sexual activity with others aged 16 and over
Drink wine/beer with a meal if accompanied by someone over 18
    Get a National Insurance number
    Join a trade union
Work full-time if you have left school
Be paid national minimum wage for 16/17 year olds
Join the Armed Forces with parental consent
    Change name by deed poll
Leave home with or without parental consent
In certain circumstances you must pay for prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests
    Choose a GP
    Consent to medical treatment
    Buy premium bonds
    Pilot a glider
    Buy a lottery ticket
Register as a blood donor, but you won't be called to give blood until you're 17
Apply for a passport without parental consent

    No taxation without representation?

Sorry, can you explain how it has nothing to do with the subject? Either under 18's are responsible for their actions/decisions or they aren't.

What do paedophiles have to do with it?

What? I wasn't making a point about paedophiles but about hypocrisy over the issue. We hold children responsible for their actions when it suits us but we don't afford them the rights that should go with those responsibilities.

Oh never mind, if I have to explain there is no point

Seriously though, do you have teenagers?

I can't imagine that at all.

Anyway, until they start doing politics for xbox my son should not be voting, that's all I'm drunkenly trying to say

I am not sure you are going to get a very high turnout if everybody who has played fifa this year isn't allowed to vote.

It's a fair point. Mature enough to sell yourself for sex but not old enough to vote? Can't have it both ways.

Have you noticed in your own list a theme of limitation and control ? Why do you think that is ?

I meant he's not interested and knows nothing about it, if he votes he will just be ticking a box for the sake of it or because someone else has told him to, what's the point in that?

I get what you are saying now after reading other threads but there was no mention of selling yourself for sex in this thread.
