Xmas is all that is wrong with western society , the hidden tribes of the Amazon have got the right idea , sadly they are going to be gone soon

Unless your magnificence extends to regenerating rain forests and rivers ?

When the trees have all been cut down and the rivers have all run dry then you will know that you cannot eat money

    Enjoy your beer and turkey
    I will, you miserable bastard.

I have been down the local food bank today donating corned beef , tins of veg , beans , tuna , peaches , tinned custard etc

Christmas was originally a pagan festival

Do it regularly, all year round though.

Sadly people starve 365 days of the year.

Dan had 3 test pressings made in Germany to see what the album would sound like on Vinyl and how much material they could get on a single album I have one of them the quality of the pressing is excellent.

I meant working at the food bank actually. "Christmas was originally a pagan festival". It certainly was not. The pagans may have had their winter celebration but it certainly wasn't called the Christ Mass! And in any case what has that to do with why you hate Christmas?

I worked with the homeless for years , donate to food banks all year round and give to shelter , housing charities , children in need etc , I am happy with what I contribute to society

The Christian's adopted the pagan festival and turned it into christmas

That scene from paths of glory where the French infantry are following Kirk Douglas from the trenches into enemy fire is powerful stuff

I’ve told you what I think already, you’re getting in a huff over it.

The planet will be here years after we’re gone.

Don’t forget them starving kids in January.

This same Jesus “bloke” that you ridicule came to show the world a better way to live i.e. to put your neighbour first but sadly humankind has in the main rejected that idea and gone its own sweet way. For every action (or inaction) there are always consequences and that is how we are where we are at today. Everyone of us is guilty as we become trapped into a world view that is based on “growth” which is what drives the exploitation of others and the devouring of the world’s resources at an accelerating pace which in turn leads to excessive CO2 production/climate change.

We may deny that that is the case but whether we like it or not we are all ensnared, as an example witness the commercialisation of Christmas with folk spending beyond their means on “stuff” that will probably be discarded before next Christmas. Individually we can try to do our bit but it is what we do collectively that will count.

At my time of life, extinction of life on earth can only be of academic interest (as my own personal extinction is getting closer!) but I have five young grandchildren and I do worry for them and their future.

I do put others first but it's got nothing to do with jesus , to me he is as irrelevant as christmas

As for the rest of your post I am in total agreement gofer

Well obviously the true meaning of Christmas is indeed irrelevant to those who find Jesus irrelevant! To me he is highly relevant and responsible for changing me from a particularly self-centred, only child into the person I am today. Like you I do my "bit". The other day I was working with about 9 other volunteers packing special Christmas food parcels (as opposed to the usual routine stuff) and the majority of the folk there were Christians. Probably no coincidence that the vast majority of food banks are run by churches?

I am very wary of the Jehovah Witnesses but one thing I think they have got more or less right is the way they distance themselves completely from the commercialisation of Christmas. Unfortunately they have taken an extremist view (IMO) in that they reject everything to do with it, to the point where they condemn Christians for even celebrating the birth of Jesus (in fact they are anti-birthdays full stop).

You don't have to be a Christian to do good works , the vast majority of people who work for shelter , the samaritans , crisis at christmas , the rotary club etc are not Christians, my local food bank is run by christians but gets most of its donations from outside of the church

I am wary of all Faith's I am afraid gofer but I am in agreement with you that the door knickers are a very odd bunch

Agree; but in my case it was the kick start I needed. It has instilled into my heart a strong and non-judgemental compassion which simply was not there before. I am saddened that you are wary of Christianity - perhaps you mean you are wary of some Christians, something I might concur with!

I am wary of all religion, it’s not something I can trust. Would be silly to say that about all Christians or all Muslims obviously, but there always seems to be an ulterior motive when it comes to religion.

I am happy that you are happy, my mother sounds the same as you and is now encouraging the kids in the family to go with her on sundays!

The "ulterior motive" as you describe it is simply that your mother would like you and your children to embrace the faith that she has because it is a great way to live (though not necessarily an easy or pain-free one). Certainly not “gun to the head” or “pie in the sky when you die” religion I would imagine – the choice is yours to accept or reject at the end of the day!

The Christians I see portrayed in the media or TV are nothing like the Christians I know. The latter are among the most selfless, compassionate, caring people you would ever meet, they show the love of Jesus but they also know that they will never be perfect!
