Overall, Cardiff City have the better record in the South Wales derby. This is mainly due to our form in the Welsh cup, made all the more extraordinary by the fact that we've won 12 out of 19 away trips to Swansea, compared with 6 out of 36 trips there in the league and English cups! Our home record in Welsh competition against the Jacks is relatively similar to our home record in English competition.

A third of all South Wales derbies have seen Swansea fail to score; 26% of derbies have seen us fail to find the net. Swansea have scored 3 or more in Cardiff only 4 times and only twice in the league, the last being a 3-1 win in 1996. We've scored 3 or more 5 times at Swansea in the league alone. At home, we've scored 3 or more 10 times - Swansea have done that at home 12 times.

Here's a breakdown of the number of times we've played each other in each respective competition:

Premier League (top tier) - 2
    Championship/2nd division - 35
    Third tier - 10
    Fourth tier - 10
    FA Cup - 1
    League Cup - 5
    FL Trophy - 4
    Southern League - 4
    Welsh Cup - 34
    FAW Premier Cup - 2

While our success against Swansea in the Welsh cup competitions is remarkable (21 wins to 7), Swansea hold the upper hand in English cup competitions, winning 3 out of 4 overall ties in FA and League cup, though both managed to eliminate each other twice from the Football League Trophy.

Since both clubs return to the Championship and a resumption of the South Wales derby in 2008, Swansea City once again hold the upper hand. They've won 5 of the 10 meetings since 2003, Cardiff just 3, though 6 of the 10 games have been held at the Liberty stadium. In the 10 games, Swansea have scored 14 to Cardiff's 10. Home wins have been much more common - 6 of the 10 games have been won by the home side (4 to Swansea, 2 to Cardiff).

It would appear that the derby matches in recent years have been quite close - 7 of the 8 wins have been by one goal, with only the 3-0 defeat with Solskjaer at the helm being a heavy scoreline. However, over the 10 games, Cardiff City have been ahead for a total of 47 minutes, with Swansea holding a lead for 297 minutes! Cardiff have held a lead on 4 occasions, Swansea 10, though Swansea have only managed one solitary equaliser against us (we've managed 5 equalising goals). At home we've scored 1 goal in 4 home matches in the first half but netted 2 game changing goals in injury time at the end. Only once in those 10 games has the team who has conceded first gone on to lose.

Swansea have scored 3 in two of their last 6 home games against us. We have to go back to Boxing day 1983 for the last time we scored 3 at home to Swansea in the league. that's 15 home games against Swansea in the league ago. Prior to that, the longest we'd been without scoring 3 or more against the Jacks at home was 4 games. In league matches, there have been 7 derbies without a draw. There has never been 8 derby matches without a draw in the history of the derby. At present, the last 5 derbies have seen the winning side keep a clean sheet. Never before have there been 6 successive derbies with clean sheets. There's also that old chestnut of no side completing a league double over the other.
