I think the first time I heard the expression was when watching a callow Darren Anderton.
I found myself shouting it last night when Capt. 'Marveloous' Morrison received a pass on the right wing.

Neither Whyte nor Hoilett made any attempt to skin the full back last night - and paid the price.
What is the point of playing on the wing if they don't have the ability to skin someone? Especially if a full back is the venerable Chrissie Gunter - who must be 50 if he's a day.
