    Cameron Coxe released.....

Bit of a shocker but unfortunately yesterday and today eight u23 players have been released by the club.
Cameron being the most high profile of the youngsters.
Steve Morrisons brush is sweeping clean.
Paid up until the end of the season but all eight are clubless having been told they’re not good enough and shown the door. 🤔🤐

Strange time of year to be doing that. 8 players seems a lot. Sounds a liitle disruptive.

I don't think so, can't see a reason why the club would keep them on until the end of the season if they have no future at the club. Get rid of them, thank them for their services and lets start getting better players in. It also gives these lads a head start on finding another club. As for CC, maybe the writing was on the wall for him already, he had two chances to impress in the FA cup and he bombed, simple as that.

What sort of age-range are we talking about? Will they be able to replace them in time to play this season?

It doesn't matter in my opinion. They're not good enough. I don't know if they'll be replaced, what it means is that someone else gets a chance or a young player advances into the u23s.

Haven't we been here before though? New manager comes in, big statement about disappointment in youth not progressing into first team, players get let go, repeat cycle 18 months-3 years later. Not going to argue all our youth players have deserved more of a chance but there is a distinction to be made between not good enough and not fancied by current manger, as well as general disappointment that no matter how many changes are made we seem to lack route to first team for youth prospects.

Can you imagine being a young player hoping to impress and finding yourself on the field with older professionals who have been told to throw the game. It would hardly fill you with confidence.

Seems very strange. I mean he had been pretty poor when played but cheap back up option for a couple of years.

    Shamar Moore
    Jake Evans
    Lawrence Wooton
    I’ll find out the other 4 👍

Gosh thought Cox was half decent from reports by those who follow the U23's, I wonder if we might see some in coming from elsewhere?

My only knowledge of these players is from what Bob Wilson has posted, and from his many reports I thought that Cameron Coxe was going to be a star of the future. This is very disappointing news, as I was really looking forward to having some home-grown talent in our team. My thoughts are with the young lads who must be feeling very devastated right now.

    In morrisson we trust.
New broom etc. Start from scratch. Football is not about sentiment.

Absolutely. Something needs to change. We can't have young pro footballers hanging about the place if they're not even close to contributing and if they had anything about them they wouldn't want to b at the club. Players know when their time is up.

I'm going to withhold my trust for a bit longer than about a fortnight and one game in charge. That said, I'd be surprised if Steve Morrison had a great deal to do with the decision to let these players go.

I say that because back in the days when our Development team consisted mostly of home grown players, you'd get the odd trialist who playing for the team from about the end of February onwards (Semi Ajayi was one of them). Invariably, these were players who had been told by the clubs they were contracted to that they would not be getting a new deal in the summer and so they were quite happy for them to play for other sides in the hope they would impress them enough to be taken on permanently. It was similar with the Academy team - usually around this time of year there would be a change in the make of of the team as younger players came in and the ones told they would not be offered pro deals dropped out.

As for those released, I watched Connor Davies in a Welsh Youth Cup Final when I believe he was just fifteen and he definitely had something about him, but he's been out on loan at Weston. It was originally for a season, but I notice he came on as a sub in the Under 23s' last game, so maybe it was ended early. Getting a loan to play a season in senior football at seventeen strikes me as pretty impressive, so I'm a little surprised he has been released, but I'm not really surprised about the others.

Sadly, this includes Cameron Coxe. Looking at it from the club's perspective, I do feel that decisions about releasing young players should be made no later than the expiry of their first professional contract and this is the situation that Coxe finds himself in. However, I go back to when Wales were invited to compete in the prestigious Toulon Under 20 tournament in 2017 where they acquitted themselves well in getting five points from their three group matches. All of the games were televised live and you only had to listen to the commentators to learn that Coxe was one of the best Welsh performers in each game - this in a squad which included Joe Rodon, George Thomas, Tyler Roberts, Dan James and Chris Mepham.

Coxe played in the manner of a modern, attack minded full back full back in those games and also did so in the Academy games I saw him play, but, to some extent with the under 23s and to a large extent in the first team, he was deployed more defensively.

You can say that, unlike so many, Coxe at least had the chance to play some first team football, but, given the general level of performance in cup matches in recent years, all four of the games he played were occasions where it would be very hard for any young player to impress. Unfortunately, despite senior players being just as culpable as he was, Coxe could be faulted for his part in at least two of the goals conceded in the games against Carlisle and, as mentioned earlier, the writing was on the wall for him when Dion Sanderson was signed - when I think back to Cameron Coxe's time at Cardiff, I'll remember that the first team just weren't playing to his strengths when he got his, limited, opportunities.

Best of luck to all of those who have been let go.

I get your point but CC would've known, especially after the Carlisle game and some of the other players would've been aware of the situation. They train every day and a player knows if they're developing or not. Look at Ampadu against Spurs, plenty of doubts from certain quarters, even myself, but he came in and showed composure and maturity, he wanted the ball and took responsibility. He has now given everyone concerned something to think about. Could you imagine if he'd had a shitter? Fine lines indeed.

    About to say the same.

They'll sign for a lower league club, and in a couple of years we'll see them signing for a prem club for £20M +

Don't think we've had too many of our youth prospects go onto big things over past 5 years though. Most seem to end up at Barry Town which, although a very decent standard of football these days, is not the Championship or better. I wouldn't be able to point to any as a clear sign club has got it wrong to release players from youth squad but don't think what the club has been doing has been working, the players must have had a better chance of success elsewhere, so yet another change of approach at youth level doesn't fill me with confidence.

I’d love it judging from some of the cut-throat responses on here.

The amount of quality players that would never have made it after having bombed in two games.

I wonder what sort of insight SM could have got after being here for a few weeks.

County will be rubbing their hands.

Mate he's almost 21 and has been under two different regimes now, you can't say with any certainty that it was Morrison's decision so cut that out.

People really overestimate our academy players, I get we're crying out for young local lads playing for the first team but it doesn't mean we should hang on to players in the hope they come good.

Not a single player we have released in the past 10 years has gone onto better things, the only academy prospect who has done anything of note is Matando and we had no choice in that one. As long as our academy is cat 2 we won't much of note

    Re: Cameron Coxe released.....

Disappointing as I thought maybe he could make the grade. But in all seriousness, what regrettable attrition have we had from our under 23s In our history? Ramsey and Matondo aside for which we had little say in

    Re: Cameron Coxe released.....

I'm a bit surprised that we've released Coxe, but bringing in Sanderson on loan wasn't a good sign for his prospects.

Maybe Carlisle was his last shot at breaking into the first team.
    It didn’t go well unfortunately.
