I just looked up the 2002-3 squad to compare Earnie's and Thorne's stats and out of a total squad of 36 players listed, 18 were Welsh.

Was that the last time Welsh players made up 50% or more of the squad?

Good question, difficult to tell without some detailed year by year analysis but you're probably right
