I remember drinking in the Matchstick Man a few times. There were a few characters in there to say the least. But I've always found if you treated people tidy, you'd get the respect back. If you thought you were something special you'd get taken down a peg or two also. Is the Matchstick Man still there?
It’s a Quote from Bob Marley
When darkness surrounds you, you might be tempted to look for a switch or hope that a light comes on to get rid of it all. But you have to remember that you are the light, and you have the power to overcome the darkness that exists in the world.
Light up the darkness
I had browsed the site for a while before signing up.
When I signed up there was a big culture of some people being close to Hamman and being insiders of his inner sanctum
Fnaar Fnaar.
So I signed up as insider knowing absolutely fa of Hamman and his inner sanctum.
There’s good and bad wherever you go. I mentioned about boys I grew up with going down the crime and drugs route but I’ve also got friends who have done well for themselves. My good friend from junior school is an architect, his brother went to London working in the media and their parents still live on the estate. Mark Pembridge and Jason Bowen both from the estate. Families still live there. Life is tough for some no doubt but it’s the same everywhere.
While we're on the Merthyr theme, I had some of my best nights out over there. Charbonnias nightclub being one of my favourites. I remember there was a faggots and peas van just down the road where Lloyds bank is. Many a time after kicking out, I'd absolutely ruin my shirt with green and brown stains that Cillit Bang couldn't even budge. Last time I looked there was a tree growing through the middle of it.
Coolers was also tidy. We used to start off in a pub just up the road from there by the roundabout. Last time I looked it was a funeral home? Also the Brandy Bridge. That could get a little spicy to say the least
All built at the same time or different estates within Ely? I’ve never heard it called the Ely Estate tbh but then I’m not from Cardiff. Sometimes villages or districts are made up of different estates.
The sort of houses you see on Grand Avenue would be considered mansions up the Gurnos Estate.
Charbonniers burned down early 90s and has all sorts growing out of it but because it’s a listed building they can’t/won’t knock it down.
Brandy Bridge was before my time but I heard it was like the Wild West
Great Escape is the pub you’re thinking of by the roundabout near Kooler. Another rough pub back in the day.
Ely is 1 big council estate built after the 1st World war. Homes for heroes
Caerau was built after the second World War.
They used to call it old side and new side of Ely.
I've lived at the top of Ely for 50 years like anywhere good and bad people.
Most are honest genuine hard working people some of my best mates from there.
