Part of solving this question is knowing that Barrie Hole's first name is Barrington.

    1. An unmoving ketch

An anagram of Super Kev - say no more

    2. He won a League Cup Winners Medal, he didn’t play in an FA Cup Final as a result of a fight with Fabrizio Ravanelli and he played 29 times for us in the noughties - who is he ?

We signed Neil Cox from Watford. Previously he had won a League Cup winners medal with Aston Villa. Just before the 1997 FA Cup Final when his team Middlesbrough were due to play Chelsea Cox had an argument with Ravanelli who had declared himself fit to play in the final. Cox was firmly convinced that he wasn’t and an altercation ensued. On the morning of the final Cox was dropped much to his everlasting regret. On the day Chelsea won comfortably 2-0, Ravanelli only lasted 24 minutes before going off and Cox was proved to be right.

    3. Name the 2 Cardiff City players associated with Psalm 91 verse 3.

I wondered how i could ask a biblically related question about Robbie Fowler so I Googled Fowler + Bible and came up with Psalm 91. Then I remembered Jason Fowler so adjusted the question accordingly. Well done to Cardiff55 who recalled a failed triallist called Lee Fowler who played 1 FAW Premier game in 2003 making 3 Fowlers (at least) to have played for us.

    4. A City stalwart he played 231 times for us over 7 seasons and his surname is associated with Brean Sands - who is he ?

In 1946 Fred Pontin opened his first holiday camp at a WW2 US Army Base as Brean Sands near Weston Super Mare. Keith Pontin was a great club servant but is now, sadly, a victim of dementia believed to have been brought on as a result of his footballing career.

    5. A very useful signing in the 1980s he only lasted one season as he didn’t settle here and his surname could be a homophone of being in debt - who is he ?

Signed from Sheffield Wednesday Gordon Owen (Owing ?) played one impressive season for us in 1983/84 playing 46 times and scoring 19 times and ending up top scorer. A record broadly comparable with Peter Hooper 20 years earlier. However after only one season he joined Barnsley for a fee of £27,000 set by a tribunal. We wanted £100,000, Barnsley offered £10,000 and we felt hard done by.

    6. Which Cardiff City Legend shares a surname with an Australian Test Cricketer nicknamed “The Black Prince” ?

When John Toshack first came on the scene in the 1960s I remarked to my dad that he had an unusual surname. He said to me that he remembered a cricketer, Ernie Toshack, touring with the all conquering Australians in 1948 - Bradman’s farewell to test cricket. It has always stuck in my mind.

    7. Which former City stalwart was playing in the match when ‘keeper JImmy Glass famously scored the winner to keep his team in the Football League ?

At of the 1998/99 whilst we were gaining promotion to Division 2 (3rd tier ) ! Carlisle were struggling against relegation and they had to win their final game against Plymouth to stay up. It was 1-1 until a corner in the dying seconds when Carlisle ‘keeper Jimmy Glass famously scored the winner. Starting for Carlisle that day was Damon Searle. However, he was substituted late in the game so was not on the pitch and the dramatic moment. Carlisle stayed up and Scarborough were relegated to the Conference instead. Also in the Plymouth team that day was fleeting ex City player Glen Crowe who played 9 times on loan for us in 1997/98.

    8. Cheers a cringer

Chris Greenacre - signed on loan from Manchester City he played 12 times scoring twice in 1997/98. He went in to have a decent career with good spells at both Mansfield and Tranmere and in the latter case, showing manager Ronnie Moore where the net was !

    9. He played 61 times for us in the 90s and scored his only goal for us in a big home win against a team that were relegated with a goal difference of -83 - who is he ?

March 14 1998 we beat Doncaster Rovers 7-1 at home and Chris Beech scored his one and only goal for us. Doncaster were absolutely dreadful that season finishing bottom with 20 points scoring only 30 goals and conceding 113 and dropping into the conference. Mind you, were were not exactly pulling up trees that season finishing bottom but 3 but we were 30 points in front of Doncaster so never in any danger.

    10. Capped many times for Wales, his first name also the name of an obdurate Surrey Test batsman and his surname is that of a character portrayed by Michael Fassbender - who is he ?

It was sometime in the 2000s that I stumbled across the fact that Barrie Hole’s first name was Barrington and that Barrie was an abbreviation. I never realised that all the times I saw him play for us and Wales. The obdurate Surrey batsman is Ken Barrington, not the most exciting batsman by any means but difficult to dislodge. Michael Fassbender played the Jo Nesbø fictional detective Harry Hole in the 2017 film “The Snowman”.

    11. 6 Popes and a 20th century Archbishop of Canterbury.

There were 6 Popes called Paul and between 1961 and 1974 the Archbishop of Canterbury had the surname Ramsey - Paul Ramsey

    12. He played 54 times for us until 1999 in a City career blighted by injury and shares a surname with famous author best known for Gothic Horror - who is he ?

Midfielder Gareth Stoker, signed from Hereford United either for £80,000 ( someone bigging him up on Wiki ?) or £25,000 according to other sources. Did his ACL with us and eventually left on a free to Rochdale. Bram Stoker wrote “Dracula”. I will leave it to you to decide who was the more memorable.

    13. This defender made his debut for us in 1997 playing 28 times and went on to have 4 spells at Bath City playing for them over 500 times - who is he ?

Jimmy Rollo - signed from Walsall in 1996/97 his 26 games for us were the last that he would play in the Football League. He left us at the age of 22 and went on o have a flourishing non-league career, primarily with Bath City but other West Country clubs too.

    14. He played for us for 2 seasons at the end of the 60s and his surname is an antonym of a synonym of his first name - who is he ?

How to ask a question about the unmemorable Frank Sharp whom signed from Carlisle in 1969 ? Well, an antonym of sharp is blunt and a synonym of blunt ( in the spoken sense) is frank - Frank Sharp !!

    15. He played a handful of games for us on loan in a season when we were relegated to Division 4 and shares a surname with an England centre forward nicknamed “The Tank” - who is he ?

Dave Kevan - signed on loan from Neil Warnock’s Notts County in 1989. We sent him back after 7 games. He is an extremely vague memory for me but not his namesake Derek Kevan, an old fashioned bulldozing centre forward who played for WBA, where he scored 173 times in 291 games and also for England. I remember his name well from, not just his reputation, but also from football cards I used to collect that came from packets of bubble gum.

Re: Assorted Football Quiz Questions 11

I saw Frank Sharp play, he was signed as Ronnie Bird's intended replacement I believe. He was Ok, a few games for Heats and about 30 for Carlisle and Scoular shelled out £5000 for him. He played a bit after being signed, and the following season made his first appearance at home to QPR and broke his collar bone. We stuffed them by the way with dave Carver totally marking Rodney Marsh out of the games s he always did. A few moire games at the end of the season when he was sold to Barnsley for a joint fee of £20,000 with Les Lea as part of the deal. I though Lea was excellent but with the money Scoular put it towards buying Ian Gisbon, who was even better.
