Anyone one else struck by this irony?

For a long time, we've become accustomed to the reaction of many to some action or instruction or law, which they have seen as infringing their freedom/liberty. Often their feelings may have seemed disproportionate to the invasion of their rights to which they hold so dear.

Yet for the last few days all we hear is almost hysterical criticism that we haven't been given sufficient guidelines, even rules, about what we can and can't do during the next stage of dealing with the virus.

Not saying that the power- that-be have not been criminally lacking when it comes to giving clear and precise instructions - rather that the hitherto freedom-lovers seem to have become regulation enthusiasts.

I wonder if it’s got anything to do with the current situation involving a devastating pandemic, rather than, say, CCTV cameras watching people up to no good?
    Just asking for a friend...

I don't believe that criticising the government for a lack of clarity in their guidelines equates to becoming a regulation enthusiast. Far from it.

I haven't seen anyone who has previously bemoaned any infringement on their civil liberties suddenly becoming a 'regulation enthusiast'. On the contrary, those who have previously waxed lyrical about their liberties have been doing exactly that throughout this crisis. If anything, their observations have become more forceful.

Governments around the globe are guilty of depriving the people they represent of education, promoting xenophobia, "pull-up-your-bootstaps up" propaganda and the myth of freedom (and protecting it) in a bid to cling to power (and funnel vast sums of money into the military and therefore corporations that keep it supplied) and devolve responsibility elsewhere.

Now it's biting everyone on the arse and people are starting to realise.

    Something has to change.
