How is it patronising?
On this subject, I'd like to quote a song from the 90s
'When I was born, I was black,
When I grew up, I was black,
When I'm sick, I'm black,
When I go out in the sun, I'm black,
When I'm cold, I'm black,
When I die, I'll be black,
But you,
When you're born, you're pink,
When you grow up, you're white,
When you're sick, you're green,
When you go out in the sun, you go red,
When you're cold, you go blue,
When you die, you'll be purple,
And you have the nerve to call me colored!'
When i worked on the Olympics we had to do management inclusiveitydays and at one i was castigated by 2 tutors for using the term "coloured" as it was deemed to be derogatory. I was told the correct work was black. The black guy sitting next to me said it was a load of bollox and it made no difference.
Now you here people using the phrase, "People of colour" like pink isn't a colour. Which is another load of bollox. Jby making up these 'PC' phrases to not harm people sensitivity is in itself saying they are different.
If I'm out I always drink black coffee. Can't tolerate milk. Always wanting to be politically correct I went through a phase, when asked how I wanted my coffee (or americano or plain filter coffee as it is now known), I'd reply "without milk". I was on a train once, I think one with a buffet car, where a black guy was waiting to serve me. Similar routine, asked how I wanted my coffee. I gave the usual reply. He said something like, "Black coffee, then. It's ok to ask for a black coffee." I asked him if he thought that could be considered slightly offensive. He didn't, and he didn't know of any other black people who did.
What I don't understand are those who would rather say something that could be considered offensive just because they've always said it or because it is an attack on their freedom. I'd rather everyone get along, and if it means altering the way something is said, then so what? That doesn't hurt me.
