Re: Assorted Football Quiz Questions 15

Thanks to every one who had a go and here is a summary of the answers.

    1. He played over 200 games for us in the noughties and he was our Dennis Bergkamp - who is he ?

Paul Parry played 214 times for us. I may be a bit unfair to say that thinly thing he had in common with Dennis Bergkamp was aviophobia but, between 2004 and 2009 I don’t suppose the City did as much flying to games as Arsenal did.

    2. Driving whilst disqualified and perverting the course of justice - 2002 to 2005.

Gary Croft served a 4 month prison sentence for these offences resulting him being the first professional footballer to wear an electronic tag during a game whilst with Ipswich Town. Cardiff City’s keenness on the principle of rehabilitation of offenders caused them to not to consider seriously injury problems that had plagued him at Ipswich and they continued at Cardiff. After a 3 year stretch at Ninian Park he was released back into the community in Grimsby.

    3. Which former City player played in the highest scoring Premier League game ?

29 September 2007 - Portsmouth 7 Reading 4 ,in the Reading team that day was James Harper who played for us 4 times on loan from Arsenal in 2000/01

    4. In the noughties this international played for Falkirk immediately before us and Coventry immediately after - who is he ?

Kaspar Schmeichel came to us on loan from Manchester City in 2007/08 which was a season in which 5 goalkeepers played for us and ended with a monumental goalkeeping cock up. Prior to joining us on loan he had been on loan at Falkirk and he left us to play on loan for Coventry.

    5. Kill pink history

    Tony Philliskirk - simples !

    6. We bought this player from the Saint and his surname is the past tense of a verb - who is he ?

Paul Went - The Saint in this case is Ian St John who, at the time was manager of Portsmouth. Times were hard at Fratton Park and Went was sold to us to reduce their wage bill.

    7. This City player shares a name with a billionaire on the Forbes List who founded the River Island High Street fashion brand - who is he ?

Bernard Lewis is the name of the billionaire and Bernard Lewis is the winger who played for us for 4 seasons until we sold him to Watford in 1967. I must have seen him play any number of times but he has left absolutely no impression upon me. Whilst he was being consistently unmemorable in the no 11 shirt Greg Farrell on the other wing was being frustratingly memorable as a world beater such as in his amazing performance against Middlesbrough in 1966 or mostly non-existent.

    8. This former City player’s wife was a contestant on Big Brother and he finished his career with The Gingerbreads in 2007 - who is he ?

Stacy Coldicott played 6 games on loan from WBA in 1996. After his short spell with us he spent 7 years at Grimsby Town where, eventually, Russell Slade dispensed with his services. His wife appeared on Big Brother in 2003, at the time of their divorce, when she came 4th but then, like most BB contestants, faded into nonentity. However, she did get custody of the pet dogs ! Stacy Coldicott finished his career with Grantham Town - The Gingerbreads. Apparently, Grantham is famous for the production of Gingerbread biscuits, the birthplace of Nicholas Parsons and some politician or other.

    9. After playing 48 times for us in the 90s we loaned hm to The Cardinals, he later played at Crabble and his last two clubs were The Fish and The Deres - who is he ?

Darren Adams. Signed from non-league Danson Furnace in 93/94. He was with us until 95/96 which were difficult times. We loaned him to non-league Woking which was probably his level. He went on to play for Dover Athletic who play at Crabble and later Fisher Athletic (The Fish) and Erith and Belvedere ( The Deres)

    10. Sparks before

Sparks = Spencer as in Marks and Sparks/Spencer, before = Prior - Spencer Prior !

    11. What is the link between Gary Stevens, Lymeswold Cheese and Accrington Stanley ?

In 1981/82 the League Cup became known as the Milk Cup as a result of sponsorship by the Milk Marketing Board who decided to use surplus milk production to create a new cheese called Lymeswold ( if you were Private Eye reader then it was called Slymeswold). The MMB also created a famous advert suggesting that if you didn’t drink enough milk then you would only be good enough to play for Accrington Stanley - see Youtube clip…….

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPFrTBppRfw

Gary Stevens was the first City player to score a Milk Cup goal - he scored both goals in a 2-1 win against Exeter City in 1981.

    12. A former City Manager and a former City player both went on to manage The Faithful - name them both.

The Faithful are Worcester City - they were managed by former City player Wilf Grant - a successful post war striker and former City manager Bill Jones who managed us from 1958 to 1962 who, sadly, is not deemed important enough to justify his own Wiki entry.

    13. A product of the City youth system in the 90s, Newcastle paid us £150,000 compensation to sign him before he could play for us. He never played for Newcastle but became a stalwart of Yeovil’s first 3 seasons in the Football League - who is he ?

Kevin Gall - a City trainee who Newcastle thought was good enough to lure him way in 1997 paying us £150k compensation. However he never played for them either. His most successful spell as a player was when Yeovil were promoted to and established themselves in the Football League. He now works for a Football Agency.

    14. A former Bluebird, he gave us a scare by scoring for Gloucester City at Ninian Park in 1989 - who is he ?

Striker Chris Townsend played 3 times for us in 1983/84 scoring once in the Welsh Cup against Taffs Well. He made a notable return to Ninian Park in 1989 with Gloucester City who found themselves 2-0 up with minutes to go and on the brink of a Cup giant killing act. However, Morrys Scott found the net twice to save our skins and he then went on to complete his city scoring career by scoring the only goal in the replay. Here is a Youtube clip of Chris Townsend scoring Gloucester’s second goal that day past George Wood with Ian Rodgerson looking on.

    15. This Bluebird won 2 Turkish Super League Championship medals and was named in the Darlington all time “Dream Team” - who is he ?

Alan Walsh played once for us in 1992 but had previously played 500 games for Darlington and Bristol City. However, he won 2 League and 2 Cup medals in Turkey whilst with Besiktas. He is, justifiably, a Darlington legend as their record goal scorer.
