    Istanbul 2005

Just came across the Liverpool / AC Milan 2005 final on YouTube:-

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWdPDofBxl0

Unbelievable game of course but I'd forgotten what a team Milan put out that night:

    Brazilian GK
    Cafu
    Stam
    Nesta
    Maldini
    Gattuso
    Pirlo
    Seedorf
    Kaka
    Shevchenko
    Crespo

...and their manager was one Carlo Ancelotti, still working his magic at Everton of all places.

That's probably as perfectly a balanced team as you can get.

If everybody in the defence were at least 3 to 5 years younger. Maldini was 36, Cafu 34 and i think the youngest defender was Nesta at 29. Great side but too old at the back.

3-0 was more than fair at half time. Milan were exceptional in the first half from what I remember. For a team that experienced to collapse was pretty remarkable.

    that's a good point.

every one of that back four would be in the conversation about being the best to have played in their respective positions

The goalkeeper was Dida... until recent times probably the best Brazilian keeper of all time.

What a team. Whilst the Liverpool comeback was fantastic, Milan still had chances to bury that game, even at 3-3.
Liverpool somehow clawed their way to a penalty shootout and the rest is history.

It's funny, but my main memory of the game now is an astonishing, or lucky, save by Dudek.

That’s right. From Shevchenko I think. He looked like he couldn’t believe that he hadn’t scored.
