    Craig Johnston

I'll be honest I had never heard of him, but what a story. Went on to design the Adidas Predator boot.

Nah - David Fairclough was the first.
Didnt Craig Johnstone become a fluent Spanish speaker and successful TV presenter after he retired (I haven't read the article btw)

You might be thinking about the late Michael Robinson.

    Good read!
I met him at The Phoenix festival back in the 90’s.
    Was a nice friendly guy.

He was a brilliant player; a key member of the Liverpool team that won several league titles. He is Australian.

Jack Charlton comes across as a bit of a Kent in that article.

I guess duty of care wasn't a thing in those days, imagine making a 15 year old boy sleep.in a coal shed for months thousands of miles away from his parents

To the poster who said he was the first 'Super Sub" - definitely not! As The Bloop pointed out, that accolade went to David Fairclough.

Interestingly, he developed the idea for the Predator football boot when taking his dog for a walk in the park one day. He was wearing wellington boots, the industrial sort, with the vulcanised rubber wrapped around the front toe. A group of kids were having a kick-about and the ball came towards Johnson, he kicked the ball square on with the toe and it just cannoned off his foot. It was this moment that led him to think about how it could be applied to a football boot.
