Yes, a very interesting election, and given more symbolic importance given Sweden will hold the presidency of the council of europe early next year.

Also interesting because Sweden took a different path on Covid and never really had the lockdowns and various mandates that nearly everyone else did.

The Social Democrats (their Labour Party essentially) actually increased their share of the vote, but as is the norm in much of Europe, it’s about coalitions, and the right-wing coalition in general just scraped home. Sweden is known as a centre-left place, but it’s not entirely uncommon for their governments to be right wing.

Couple of things struck me about this; firstly the level of gun deaths in Sweden. 47 this year so far in a country of 10m

In the UK in all of 2021 it was 35 for a country nearly 7 times more populated.

I make that a gun murder rate in Sweden that is around 10 times greater than the UK. In Sweden! It’s no wonder people aren’t happy.

The other thing of note, is that the greatest support for the left is amongst older people. According to this at least, amongst the youngest, the Social Democrats are behind the Moderate Party (Tory equivalents) and the Swedish Democrats.

Same happened in Germany , Hungary, etc etc , I think as the cost of living bites as will the impact of immigration boosting public Euroscepticism ,the generosity of European countries could be at an end .

One of the issues of free movement numbers and the Brexit campaign was the potential worth in number of migrants being accepted into other European who to be fair were much than us and the unforeseen increase in numbers of free movement people to the UK , after those those migrants eventually become citizens of a European country .

good article on free movement form 2018 , which I'd forgotten about :

Yeah immigration is a pretty big issue in every country in Europe. I think on the continent it tends to be less about 'freedom of movement' within the EU and more about non-EU immigration and integration within communities. I can see why thats an issue, and I do think it's something the left needs to recognise instead of wishing the problem a way which they can sometimes be accused of with some validity.

The Italian General election next week will be very interesting also.

    Serious question...
    Is Rosengards reputation unfounded?
I think I read that it was a police no go area.
Obviously every major city has its own crime issues.
