    Turner Hangs Up His Boots

    http://nonleague.today/news/details.php?news_id=13180

It has been announced that Ben Turner, recently appointed as assistant-manager to Jamie Ward at Pitching In Southern League Premier Division Central club Ilkeston Town, is having to retire from the playing side of the game.

The 34-year-old suffered another ankle injury which requires surgery and having already undergone nine previous operations on the same ankle, he has decided to now concentrate on his coaching and assisting Ward.

Turner joined Ilkeston in May from former Northern Premier League rivals Buxton.

He had signed for the Bucks in July 2021 from Vanarama National League side Notts County, where he had been since July 2019.

He amassed almost 300 League appearances and has played in each of England’s top four tiers.
He was most recently with League Two side Mansfield Town having started his career with Coventry City, making his professional debut aged 18 in April 2006.

He joined Peterborough United on loan for the first part of the following season before returning to the Ricoh Arena in January and spending a short time at Oldham Athletic.

In 2007/08 he began to establish himself in the Coventry team. He stayed with the Sky Blues until the summer of 2011, when Cardiff City parted with a reported £750,000 to secure his services.

He enjoyed a hugely successful first season with the Bluebirds as they reached the final of the League Cup, where he scored a dramatic equaliser deep into extra-time to send the tie to penalties. They were ultimately beaten by Liverpool.

The defender made 43 appearances during that campaign as Cardiff also qualified for the Championship play-offs but lost to West Ham in the semi-finals.

The Bluebirds won the title the following season and he made 31 Premier League appearances during 2013/14.

Injuries restricted him to just 19 appearances in all competitions over the next two campaigns with a loan at former club Coventry preceding his release from Cardiff in June 2016

Good luck in your managerial career, Ben. That goal v Liverpool in the final is probably one of the greatest moments in most fans' recent memories.

He should hang them from the top of Blackpool Tower seeing as he spent most of his career smashing the ball as high up in the sky as he could.

Yes, good luck Ben. My abiding memory is of Ben swinging his shirt in the air after scoring that goal.

100%. I will never forget that. Probably my favourite City goal of all time tbh. I've rewatched in on youtube so many times since

I saw the interview with Ben Turner a few months ago and he spoke really well.

He completely denies he said anything and feels really hard done by.

Apparently there was one witness in the who melee when it happened and If it was a law court hed never have been found guilty.

Hes still upset about it and the effect it had on him ie people thinking hes that sort of person which is shown on this thread.

yep, I saw a piece about it a few years back, he was adamant he was innocent ( of course he would say that ) but with only 1 other person hearing it, he just might be telling the truth, The FA report ( you can DL it from the FA site ) also points that only 1 other person heard it ( despite him being 10 - 15 yards away and shouting it across the pitch after a group of players had a bit of handbags ), BT did abuse the player, called him a Dirty Little C$%^, he admits that, but it wasnt racial, the FA called in other players who were around the incident ( Melee as it was referred to ) and none of them heard it

as I said, just maybe he was telling the truth

Or maybe no one heard it, because no one is a grass and footballers stick together, like police officers when people get injured in police stations.
