Sunak tears up manifesto of promises from leadership election

Rishi Sunak has torn up his manifesto of pledges from the summer’s leadership contest, including a 10-point plan to tackle immigration.

The prime minister’s press secretary told reporters that Mr Sunak is in discussions with ministers to determine which of his promises are still “deliverable” and “possible” – and every pledge is on the table.

She also threw into doubt whether the PM regards himself as bound by key pledges from the Tories’ 2019 general election manifesto, like the pensions “triple lock”, or his promise as chancellor to uprate benefits in line with inflation.

And while she said that Mr Sunak remains committed to “the promise of the manifesto”, she indicated that both pensions and benefits are up for grabs in chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s 17 November autumn statement.

The moves will give further fuel to demands for an early general election, to allow voters a chance to give the prime minister a mandate to implement the new raft of policies he is drawing up.

Sensible move , especially if you want to remove the legacies and mistakes of others..

By creating your own policies your responsible and able to better defend them , you can easily argue the election manifesto is now dead in the water , and undeliverable because of (exceptional fisical circumstances ) due to the unforseen impact on the public purse due too Covid , Engery Crisis , Ukrainian War , cresting huge uncertainty in global markets and financial pressures and inflationary impacts accross the globe, especially in in China , USA , Europe ..

And hey you could argue Sir Bier has done the same with comrade Corbyns election manfesto ..

Starmer isn't PM enacting policies and he won't be without winning support for his policies at an election.

And to say Rishi has been forced to dump his pledges because of exceptional circumstances is nonsense too, because when he was parading these ideas around just a few months ago we were in the same position.

That being said, at least pensioners and benefit claimants are also being dragged down with working people (that's sarcasm by the way). The only group who is untouchable are multi multi millionaires and billionaires with all their money in assets and companies. I wonder why a multi multi millionaire on course to inherit a billion £ fortune would go out of his way to protect them?!? Who knows.

Re: Sunak tears up manifesto of promises from leadership election

    From The Guardian:

A Labour spokesperson said: “I think what we’re seeing is a government that is bedevilled by its core problem – and that is that decisions are being made for reasons of party management, not in the national interest.

“Look at why we’ve got Suella Braverman as home secretary in the first place. She’s purely there because of a deal that was done during the course of the Tory leadership election.

“Whether it’s on the decision to go to Cop27, whether it’s on decisions of policy, whether it’s on decisions of personnel, you’ll see a government that is simply trying to get by on the basis of party political management rather than the national interest, and that’s not the way the country should be run.”

Hard not to agree with any of that. How long will it be before people are rioting if we don't have a General Election soon? People are already dying due to benefits cuts, NHS services and waiting lists and winter will be worse. This is no time to be ideological and there's never been a time to have such protection of the superrich as well as such a widening gulf between rich and poor. Enough is enough.

We won't get a general election because calling one would see the obliteration on the Conservative Party

Which I would love to see
