Thread: Would you be interested in a '5 Nations' for football?

  1. #1

Would you be interested in a '5 Nations' for football?

    England
    Wales
    Scotland
    Northern Ireland
    Republic of Ireland

Or would it be pointless with England winning every single year?

Could be the qualification group for 2030

If all 5 host the Euros in a few years time, then without any qualifying matches, I think it's a distinct possibility.

It would be pointless, I think.

Re: Would you be interested in a '5 Nations' for football?

Nah. Takes the interest off the rivalries if we play the other teams every year.

Re: Would you be interested in a '5 Nations' for football?

I think we have enough games with that nations thing.

frankly too much international football screwing up the domestic stuff.

Re: Would you be interested in a '5 Nations' for football?

Wasn't the old "home nations" comp at end of season (no RoI) scrapped because England thought the opposition was beneath them?

Re: Would you be interested in a '5 Nations' for football?

    No

Northern Ireland more of an enclave than a nation anyway.

Waste of time. Waste of money. Too much landfill needed for the half-and-half scarves. Bad for the environment. Let's get our club sorted first and foremost.

Would UEFA accept 5 automatic qualifiers? I doubt it

If they do I think you may well be right

Like the home internationals only with Ireland? No. I think it would be shit. No one would care about the football, and there would be violence.

You think Kane or Grealish would turn up for that? Or Rambo or Bale for that matter? It would be like watching the highlights they show on CCTV at half time.

England would never allow it, that’s why the original Home international championship finished in the eighties, England thought they were above such things, but they did deign to keep on playing Scotland for a while before eventually deciding to ditch that annual fixture as well. England’s superiority complex has even seen them drop out of the Victory Shield tournament for under 16s with the Republic of Ireland coming in to replace them.

I’m nervous about anything which puts any sense of Britishness to football. It could be the start of the slippery slope.

They tried this but without England in 2011. It was rubbish. 529 people turned up for Wales v. Northern Ireland in the Aviva.
