Thread: How are things looking statistically?

    How are things looking statistically?

19th in the table, 3 points off the relegation zone isn't ideal. Only 24 times before have we managed fewer points (taking 3 for a win in all cases). We've only twice had a better record than we currently have and been relegated, which might give cause for optimism, being relegated on 11 of the 24 occasions when our record has been worse. One relegation from a better position than we are in currently happened in 1961/62, where we were 14th in a 22 team Division 1, yet only 4 points off bottom and 11 off top spot. Converting wins to 3 points, there was a difference of 27 points between top and bottom (in 2021 it was 46), showing how tight the division was. We went down without much of a whimper that season.

Only once before have we scored fewer goals after 25 games. It was in our first Premier League season. That's a shocking stat. In all the shit seasons we've had, we've been more potent in attack than we have been this season. That is matched by the number of times we've failed to score. On every level, our attack this season is the 2nd/3rd worst in our history.

Does a low number of goals scored mean relegation at this stage? Of course, but in the 1956/57 season we'd scored 55 goals after 25 games and still went down.

Defensively things are quite different. After 25 games we've only had 13 seasons where we've conceded less goals than we have this season. Defensively this season, statistically at least, has been a triumph. Only twice since our return to the Championship in 2003 have we conceded less than we have this season in this division. Only 11 times in our history have we kept so many clean sheets in our first 25 league games. These are really impressive defensive stats.

While our goal scoring is a concern (7 in our last 12 games), it's not as bad as the 2006/07 season (where we were top for months), when we scored 6 in 13 games in going for promotion.

Another huge congratulations are in order. Never before, after 25 games, has the total of goals scored and conceded been as low. It's a unique moment. The most boring season in our history so far.

Just as well there's not a cost of living crisis as well to discourage fans from spending their hard earned money on watching their team play...
