What job do you wish you’ve done instead of the one your doing

    And actually could have done

I could have worked for Western Power.

But being young and dumb, and not having pushy parents I never ended up doing it.

Oh EastEnders is on is it...ok..

It's probably why I'm so hands on with my daughter now and she's know for a while the career route she wants to take.

I do Civils work on track. Pays nicely enough so no real regrets.

Always worked in the finance and motor trade - the 2 have always fed into each other.
Wish I had gone into the building trade.

I'm not doing any paid job any more - early retired since 2014.

But in the early summer of 1983 I went through the whole recruitment process for a job as a Firefighter at the Rotherham Eastwood training centre. It was a job I really wanted. Passed the various assessments, the physical (basically running 3 laps of a gym with another candidate in a fireman's lift), the interview, the psychometric tests... the lot. The final stage was a medical. They rejected me on the medical without any explanation - but when I had it re-done through my GP and the local hospital (I was concerned) there was nothing wrong. I suspected I was on an employment blacklist, and the Fire Brigade was outed around that time for using the Economic League blacklist of socialists, communists and active trades unionists. 2 + 2 = 4.

Instead I got a job as a Sheffield bus conductor (in the days of the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire's low fare policy), and after 3 years of that when the buses all went conductor-free I got a job as a housing officer with the Council. But getting blocked from joining the Fire Serrvice was always a regret.

I would have liked a skill such as an electrician or car mechanic but ended up in the fire service for over 30 years, but don’t regret it.

Back in the day too feckin short to be a policeman which I wouldn't have minded,
having completed an apprenticeship I wish I had done either carpentry or a leccy
very few CIH fiddle opportunities for welders, that said, it's very good dough currently for decent welders
but when I did it we were just scum

A little strange considering a chequered past that somehow (and thankfully) never led to any criminal conviction, I’d have loved to be a policeman.

How many goals did you score when you won The World Cup golden boot? The Beeb would like your credentials on your application

Many years ago when I worked for a living as a Civil Servant in London, we used to have positions available circulated. I remember them looking to fill the post of "Head of the Teenage Pregnancy Unit". Whilst I'm a Civil Engineer and this wasn't my real area of expertise, I felt that this was something I was really cut out for and that I could have done my best to help them keep the numbers up. I really regret not applying.

Indeed! If I’d avoided alcohol and Cardiff City I’d never have been a poacher in the first place haha.

I wanted to open the batting for Glamorgan. To walk down the steps at St Helens on the way out to scoring a century against the touring Australians was all I really wanted to do. In my last couple of months now as an accountant before I hang up my calculator. I’ve accepted that I may never get to walk out to the middle with Alan Jones to get the innings off to a good start.
