Oscars is a dreadful over the top event ..
As Channel Four just said, "the main theme this year was diversity..." It's felt like that for several years
It is overly politicised now and I think the core topic of quality films does seem to take a bit of a back seat.
I don't watch it cos I find Hollywood celebs very annoying but being nominated is still important and a good basis for a decent film. I tend to check Rotten Tomatoes now though and base a decision to watch something on that. I enjoy Mark Kermodes reviews too.

I listen to retro film podcasts but also struggle a bit with ones reviewing new releases. Been listening to Kermode and Mayo for donkeys years but it seems to have lost something since they left 5 Live. Empire do one which is fairly mainstream, I quite like their TV one - 'Pilot TV Podcast'. The presenters do irritate me from time to time, but that's possibly just me
