Three seasons of rubbish home form at Fortress CCS

    Played: 69
    Won: 21
    Drew: 17
    Lost: 31

    Scored: 79
    Conceded: 79

    Clean sheets: 18
    Failed to score: 23

    Scored 3 or more: 9
    Conceded 3 or more: 7

Those are a wholly uninspiring set of statistics, particularly when comparing them with away stats, where we've won 4 more games away and lost 3 fewer.

They're not our worst ever seasons at home, though they may feel like. Our unimpressive 6 wins all season at home has been achieved before, on 5 other occasions (where 3 resulted in relegation, in 1961/62, 1989/90 and 2018/19). We have won only 5 home games in a season on 5 occasions, all resulting in relegation (1984/85, 1994/95, 1999/2000 and 2013/14), bar the unusual 1997/98 season, where we drew 13 home games and 23 in total.

In 1984/85 we lost 13 games at home. We lost 12 at home last season, on a par with 1994/95, 10 this season and 9 two seasons ago. Only 12 times have we lost 9 or more home games in a season, so we've achieved in 3 successive seasons what we'd managed 9 times in the previous 86 league campaigns.

Next, I'm going to look at successive seasons at our win/loss etc stats to see how they compare.

Wins. 21 wins in 3 seasons is worse than any other 3 successive seasons in our history bar 1984-1987, where we only managed 18 wins.

Defeats. 31 defeats in 3 seasons is again worse than any other 3 successive seasons bar 1983-1986, where we (again) lost 31 games in those 3 seasons. It may be worth mentioning that, in 1984/85, we only played 21 home games.

Goals scored. 79 in 3 seasons is pretty dismal, but twice we've managed worse; 72 in 1979-82 and 70 in 1984-87. We've failed to score in a third of our home games in 3 seasons (23 times). Twice have we managed 24 times, in 1984-87 and 2004-2007.

Goals conceded. 79. This is relatively ok, we've had many occasions where this has been much worse. It might be interesting to note that, between 2009-2012 we conceded 74 at home yet finished in the playoffs 3 times in succession. Our clean sheet stats aren't too bad, either.

All in all our home form has been worse than at any time in our history bar the mid 80s when we suffered successive relegations. It is certainly our away form that has helped ensure we haven't dropped into League 1. We've never had 4 dismal home seasons in succession, so there's something to aim for.....

Do those stats include the 'behind closed doors' Covid season? Didn't we have quite good home form when no fans were allowed in? Maybe that's the way forward - if you want to see City promoted, don't go to the games. But seriously, it has to be something to do with the fans, and how the players react to them.

    They do, that's a point.

Our home from when crowds weren't allowed in was played 24, won 8, drew 6, lost 10 (from the start of the 2020/21 season, so pretty similar to our overall home form for the last 3 seasons. In 2019/20 we won 3, drew 1 and lost 1 in the league but lost a playoff semi.

Re the nine times we scored three or more, seven of those came in 20/21 and they were all in wins, so I make it we only had one win at home that season (Wycombe 2-1) where we scored less than three times - as a result of this, our home goalscoring figure that season was probably better than normal.

Am I right in thinking we only scored more than once in a home game three times this season? Two of those games were lost as well (Hull and Swansea), with our 2-0 ‘thrashing” of the wurzels being out alone as our biggest home win of the season - you’ve got to laugh, otherwise you’d cry.

    Yes, that's right. It's dreadful, isn't it?

I don't know if you spotted it, but another truly woeful stat is that we've failed to win in every home game when we've conceded. That's never happened to us before. You have to go back to March 2022 since we last conceded a goal yet won against Stoke.

    Amazing stats - thank you.
Wonder if anyone at the club has realised this.....maybe send then to the club!!!

Yes, I wonder if there’s ever been another season where 83/84 per cent of our league home wins were by 1-0? I think you’ll find the answer is no

Ironically the away dressing room at the CCS is very leisure centre ish. It's cramped and poor. Deliberately so.

The home is very spacious with individual spaces for each person with massage and warm up areas. The away dressing room has none of that.

The intention was to make it difficult for the away team but maybe it's backfired and the home team are too relaxed and comfy and we should swap!

Is that true? I thought that where a ground is used for international matches, the changing rooms had to be the same for both teams?

Similar at the Millennium stadium. The away changing room is sort of L-shaped to make teamtalks to a whole squad more tricky.

100% true. The 2 are completely different.
