That is why I could vote for him. I have little respect for Starmer ( especially after that appalling attack on Sunak over sex offenders. Whilst Burnham may have also attacked on the issue I don't think he would have done it the same way)
Like most politicians he has said stupid things in his time, but he is better than most.
It would depend on his manifesto of course.
You may as well give up.
This is why you have to be carefull with opinion polls. A lot of Tories wont admit they are Tories.
To me its simple. If youve had enough of this govt. Vote for whatever candidate will most likely to beat the Tory.
If you want more of Sunak Patel Braverman Patel Raab Mordaunt Rees-Mogg and co then carry on.
There has to be change.
I like Andy Burnham. He seems competent, reasonable, likeable enough etc. I don't know why people see him as a socialist mind (whatever that means). He's pretty central-left, pro-business etc
Must be a personal thing you have for him then - as his expenses , property flipping details , expenses all done at the tax payers expenses are nothing to be proud of (like other MPs at the time) - they treated the system as a way to fiddle the system. Both Burnham and Hilary Blears - hypocrites - along with the duck house fella.
Burnham has described himself as a socialist, but like most he is a mixed bag and probably fits a label like 'centre-left' or 'soft left' best.
He backed Kier Starmer in the Labour leadership election, but seems to have distanced himself in recent years. His own campaign for leader in 2015 (when he came a distant second to Jeremy Corbyn) was more radical than Starmer, and significantly he didn't start reneging on those positions and pledges as soon a the ballots had been counted.
He refused to join the Chicken Coup against Corbyn.
I like him as a competent, experienced, articulate and intelligent centrist politician. He genuinely believes in a broad church Labour Party, in re-nationalisation of rail and other public services/utilities, an integrated and expanded health and care system, proportional representation, devolution, the Rugby Football League, and Everton.
Some things I don't like - he abstained with most of the PLP on the Tory welfare bill back in 2015 (a day of Labour shame), gave an interview to the Sun after promising he wouldn't (and making the best and longest speech in Parliament at the end of the Hillsborough Inquest) and has made a dodgy expenses claim and been done for speeding.
Far from perfect but the best of the viable future Labour leader candidates. I would prefer to see Dawn Butler or Clive Lewis leading the Labour Party, but that won't ever happen.
"I would prefer to see Dawn Butler or Clive Lewis leading the Labour Party, but that won't ever happen."
Are you sure on that one (and each to their own) but Dim Dawn deary me . As for Lewis , a bit of a bully and misogynistic by all accounts) and a fully signed member of the Corbynista group. Each to their own though
Probably the only MP to make Dianne Abbott look intelligent
Yes I'm sure. Thanks for asking.
You are never going to get Lewis or butler leading the labour party
Corbyn got stitched up by the media, those two would be absolutely exterminated
I take it you are referring to the replacement of DLA by PIP again which is what you usually mean
I have in the past agreed that there are things wrong with the way the reviews are carried andn'
And I have told you countless times that Labour started this off when they brought in ESA and brought in the same review system the Tories used later. I also have little doubt that he would have carried out a similar review of DLA with the same results.
But this second paragraph doesn't suit your agenda does it.
Not does the fact that I have voted Liberal SDP and Liberal Democrat in some local and national elections ( there is a strong Liberal tradition on my fathers side of the family and my grandfather really did know Lloyd George). I have voted Labour on occasion locally.
I have never belonged to the Tory Party. Never will either.
Dawn Butler is dreadful
The reality of modern politics is that left wing politicians even when they are genuine are jumped on by the tory led media
There is no chance of a left wing government ever being elected in the UK so those of us that don't vote Tory need a left of centre alternative
Anything else is fantasy land and will let the Tories rule for eternity
