It’s an American thing although I hear ‘mailing it in’ used more often

They will be phoning it in on talk sport.
What the frig does it mean.
    I hate these American phrases

If only there was a way for people in other countries to see what America looks like and hear how Americans sound and the things they say. Maybe see and hear some American stories or something like that. That would be cool. ("Cool" is American slang for something good)

It's a stupid phrase no one uses it in the UK.

    But West Ham are winning.

So this explanation makes no sense.

This canard that "soccer" is an Americanism is getting old. When I was a kid, which was a very long time ago, my little friends didn't knock on the door and ask if I could come out to play "football." It was "soccer."

Here's the iconic David Coleman from 1969, not giving it a second thought:

Great clip - you forget how bad the pitches were back then.

Other things that come back to you - one keeper in a flat cap, the other in baggy tracksuit bottoms, picking the ball up from a back pass, 3 around the ball at a kick off, and all the players in long sleeves. Loads fans come on the pitch after a goal - one nearly jogged to the halfway line with the players after the 3rd.

About 5 years before my time but lovely to see us batter someone and with a 'young John Toshack' as they referred to.

PS I've never heard of phoning it in either so not sure if I'm wilfully ignorant or just ignorant

Not joking, and I did have a little think about it.
It's some kind of euphemism that I've never heard of before. It would appear, from this thread, that I'm not the only one who hasn't heard of it before.

did t realise it was an American saying, I've heard it plenty of times, most recently about Robert deniro taking increasingly lightweight and low effort acting roles
