Thread: A Welsh squad every one at Cardiff City should be embarrassed about.

A Welsh squad every one at Cardiff City should be embarrassed about.

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65747783

The club should be proud of the representation it had in under 17 Euros, but as for developing senior international players

They’re advertising the early bird season tickets going on sale again today, yet the club have done nothing, absolutely nothing to make the idea of a season ticket for 23/24 an attractive proposition - they’re relying on blind faith, nothing more, nothing less to shift tickets.

    Just noticed the BBC article doesn’t actually list the squad, here it is;

Weve lost four academy players to Premier league clubs through no fault of our own. Natured then from kids, only to be nicked at 16 years old.
Unless the rules are changed we never wil see quality players come through the academy.

And it'll only get worse with the amount of money sloshing around the PL and other places. There was that TV program or podcast or something where they sign the maximum number of kids hoping that one investment will come through. The ones that don't make it are passed on to other clubs for the agents' benefit (allegedly). PSG not surprisingly mops up just about everybody in Paris and the suburbs. Our Sol was one of them, signed up at 11 and left after two senior games (the narrative is that he wanted to leave though).

4? Crew & Biancheri left, Benjamin remains at the club

Regardless it's a poor excuse, we're not the only club whose players get poached. How come Swansea have 3 players in the squad? Alongside ex-Swans James, Roberts & Rodon? There are more Bristol City academy graduates in the squad than there are Cardiff. That's humiliating. The u23 squad of a few years ago was promising and all-conquering in their league, the mismanagement of clearly talented players has been shambolic.

This is what happens when a club's allowed to drift with no plan in place, there's very little idea of what the ownership want Cardiff to be, how they want us to play, what the identity is and so on, just relying on so called "legacy fans" to keep buying tickets and shirts.

The "campaign" for season ticket renewals shows this quite neatly. There's no theme or "narrative" in communications speak, just "renew". There's no reasons given in the clubs marketing, just "here's the prices, renew if you want". It's pathetic, how is that meant to garner interest in the club? It's not necesarily the marketing staff's fault due to all the indecision around the club, but it's more evidence of the general apathy and malaise around the club. We're just drifting along, almost waiting to be put out of our misery.

    And 3 more recent graduates

By my count the only City graduate in there is Aaron Ramsey and he left the club 15 years ago

Four graduates if you include Ben Davies. And yes, the only player in the squad to have come through City's youth ranks is 32 year-old Aaron Ramsey.

Re: A Welsh squad every one at Cardiff City should be embarrassed about.

In fairness, we've just had 2 City players go to a World Cup, so it's not all doom and gloom.

The issue for me isn't the difference in talent coming through, it's the management of it. Both the Jacks and Bristol ensure that their young players are getting game time, whether that's in their first team or on loan.

Compare that with us. Colwill has barely had a look in the last few months because the previous manager was obsessed with picking Sheyi ****ing Ojo instead. Oli Denham looked really promising last year and hasn't had a sniff this year, while wasters like Jack Simpson are in the team every other week. Surely they could have got him a loan? Then the best example: Eli King. By all accounts having a good season on loan at Crewe, so what do we do? Recall him and put him in the U23s for the rest of the season.

If young players aren't getting a sniff because the manager wants to go with experience, then OK fine. But those young players should then be given opportunities to develop on loan. And at good clubs too, not ****ing Linfield or Weston Super Mare.

The club has been badly letting down its young talent for some time now.

But our two World Cup representatives can’t get in the squad now. It’s hardly as if Colwill and Harris have looked out of place in the Welsh team, but I don’t blame Rob Page for not picking them as they’ve gone backwards for their club in the season just ended.

That apart, I agree with you - you have to question the quality of the coaching at first team level.

Re: A Welsh squad every one at Cardiff City should be embarrassed about.

Nobody should be remotely surprised by this (and I doubt anyone is really)

We've had a decade or more when it was almost impossible for home grown youngsters to break through - I remember even under Dave Jones people on here were complaining that he didn't play enough - and they probably had a point as well.

Sure Ramsey was basically a fully formed upper championship level player at the age of 16, but that is incredibly rare - most players you have to develop with significant game time at a decent standard - loaning people to Weston Super Mare or Pontypridd just isn't going to cut it.

Other clubs at this level manage to blood 2-3 youngster per year - sure a lot of them don't end up making it, but there is a huge benefit when you find one that does - you don't have to fork out money to get a player in that position, and you have an asset that you can potentially sell later for profit.

That said, if it hadn't been for injury blighted seasons Colwill and Davies could potentially be in this squad - here's hoping they get plenty of game time this coming season and really kick on.

Josh was a good player in League Two for us but fair point.

Charlie Crew has been put in the u21 squad.

I bet Crew is going to be the one that we are really going to regret letting go (not that we had much of a choice)

Answering my own question but according to a quick Google, it has been reported were some issues with his medical at Man City so he's still here.

Yep, can't really blame the club there though perhaps years of neglecting youth coming back to bite us? A strong pathway would encourage players to stay a bit more

While we are the Capital City's Football Club and should be attracting all the local talent, not sure we should consider it " something to beembarrassed about ) The two things are completely different, I always used to love the idea of the team doing well with Local lads who would Die for the Badge, but in reality, its just a job, they will be away if another club offers them better terms / money

people think us being a capital city is a far bigger deal than it really is.
in reality we are a small provincial city in a poor backwater part of the UK.

Eli King struggled at Crewe from what I could make out. He started well but lost form and only made a handful of starts in his last three months there. The Crewe manager talked about keeping him on but it didn't happen.
