    Bob Kerslake

I doubt there has ever ben a thread started before for a civil servant who has died - relatively young at 68, from cancer.

But Whispering Bob (later Sir Bob, then Lord Bob) was one of the good guys. Competent, professional, empathetic and able to lead large, complex organisations with clarity, with purpose and with a set of ethics or values that gave direction and pride to many many people.

He was a local government executive, a civil servant, a conscience and commentator and a voice of principle and honesty in the mainstream media when the government was going off the rails again. A loss to Radio 4, Channel 4, the BBC, Sky News and the British public.

I knew Bob Kerslake for years when he was Chief Executive of Sheffield City Council, and after when he moved into central government. He lived in Sheffield until his death. No faceless bureaucrat, but one of the people that made things work and made them better. Gone too soon.
