VAR. Killing football wherever it’s in operation.

Not sure why the ref didn’t give the penalty without VAR , it’s a pathetic addition to modern football

    I’m guessing because it wasn’t a penalty.

Very ladylike verbals from the English keeper after saving penalty.

I knew she was going to miss....seems to happen more often than not, that when a player looks to their left just before the kick...they miss..

A yard off the line. Surprised it wasn’t retaken.

It was , the direction of the ball changed when it hit the hand

Earps was always going to save that as long as she chose right, the Spanish player looked scared stiff. I don’t like to see penalties given for that sort of handball, but it was always going to be given with today’s interpretations - surprised it took so long for the decision to be made.

If that ‘offence’ is committed anywhere else on the pitch, play continues.

The issue was she was right I front if it , then overturned her decision not to give it despite being a yard away.

Had a decent wager on England, but Spain by far the better team on the day, and deserved winners.

    Re: Women’s World Cup

England can complain to some extent about the ref (Spain should have had a player sent off), but the better team won, no doubt about that.

That said, she’s the sort of player who is capable of turning things around by herself.
I thought it an excellent thrust into the opposition, she was desperate for the her player on her left to move into the space ahead thus releasing a forward ball, but the player was stationary frightened to go forward, as soon as Bronze went on the run, no one covered for her. Good game and for the football alone Spain deserved the win IMO but disappointed all the same.

Only one team in that. Spain on another level technically. England second best all over the pitch. Congratulations to the winners!

Agreed. Spain look some team. Wished I'd paid more attention before in this tournament!

    Re: Women’s World Cup

As has been intimated above, the blame shouldn't be aimed at Lucy Bronze, even if she did go a bit further than she should have. Any defender can do that, it's up to others to reorganise and reshuffle to cover the gap.

That was an absolute defensive masterclass from Spain. One of the best defensive performances I have ever seen I think. And not in terms of dramatic last gasp tackles, just in the sense of not letting a very good game create many chances.

    Well done Spain!

Now we'll only have 1966 mentioned every time England play - imagine 2023 being brought up every game as well!

At least there'll be a bit of competion in spoty now, and there'll be a few spare damehoods and MBEs as well.
