agreed. at times our passing was poor and we just gave the ball back to them all the time.

Seemed to be a competition between the City players as to who could lose possession quickest, which just invited unnecessary pressure. But we defended really well and Alnwick was solid. Not a great display but satisfying to.keep the clean sheet.

of interest...Newcastle the first team t have eight different scorers in a match....
Liverpool had 8 different scorers when they beat Palace 9-0 in 1989

But that was in 1989, before the Premier League - and therefore football, and indeed civilisation - existed.

I wasn't able to follow the game today, but it sounds like we absolutely battered them.

Smash and grab. Resolute defending. Great 3 points.

    Mowbray's interview after the game...

    https://youtu.be/JE9vgloOTV8?si=xPwBL9F5iUhpxHyL

    Stand out comments:

"Their substitutions, it was like land of the giants.."

"Teams like this who put everyone behind the ball to try and frustrate..
"Southampton conceded five but they wanted to win the game"

"They obviously came for a nil nil and they get one chance from a set play.."
He must've forgotten the two after we'd scored.

    Talk about sour grapes

And he should be looking at himself and his own players for not being able to take their chances or defend a set piece. Nice that he's thankful towards 'Super russ' popping along and trying to win the game, Someone should tell him that defending well is key towards winning a football match, and if conceding five goals is an attempt to win a game, then we might as well pack up and **** off home. Sunderland are very good on the ball, they're at home, confidence is high, we are without our most creative player, and as a unit, we don't really play between the lines, we try and stretch teams. Maybe Erol and the boys can accommodate Mowbray and his team on their visit. Apart from that, Feck him.

Fantastic result. What a week, 9 points from 9. A derby win and two clean sheets.

Only saw the highlights, but whilst it's true that Sunderland didn't make the most of the chances that they created, it still shows how weak we are up front. We lack lively forwards and it's been a couple of seasons since we have had someone who looks a real threat down the wing[s]. Maybe Tanner could be that player. Defence looks like becoming a settled back four, so for me 3 players to challenge for a top 6 - another really good midfielder, a 'winger' aka NML, and a striker who isn't a target man..

If we need anything , it's a target man

The ball doesn't stick at the moment and today it would have helped

I thought Etete held it up well a few times when he came on. I’d like to see him start next game, he’s improving.

Like the rest of our front line he's not quite a striker or target man or number 10

That's not to say we need to worry too much but it would be nice to have a lump on the bench or to rough them up first 45

Etete and Colwill improved us when they came on.

on a serious note he is right

the first time i have seen us play with us putting so many players behind the ball maybe the Leeds game but i fully expect the home side to be on the front foot as a rule . I can't comment on the Coventry game

Bulut has obviously studied there play and changed it a bit for this game

    worked a treat too

After the poor substitutions of Ipswich away, Bulut has got his substitutions spot on of late and changed things for the better.

We've had too many managers who have gone like for like or not changed things early enough in the past but Bulut does seem to have good coaching nous.

Its easy to say after we won the game but with Ramsey being out, he used Colwill to good effect which, along with the others getting game time, can only be a good thing.

I thought we were good value for our win. We battled. Were they the better team? maybe. But they scored nil. You can't win if you score nil.

anyone else think that if the goal hadn't gone in then we could have had a penalty for a foul on McGuiness - their defender was all over him
