    Think I've cracked it - as others have suggested, the Crescent possibly was built 1st

    If you zoom in you can see just the crescent, no 'Road'. The current 'Road' seems to form the edge of the field[s] , or orchards.

    Where did the River Canna run? Pontcanna is ‘Bridge over the Canna’ I presume. A few years back knocking a house about in Kings Rd, it was interesting that the majority of stone used in the common work was akin to Cold Knap pebbles. It was if it was retrieved from an old riverside..........just Googled it, quite interesting, there were a few bridges over it, not much of a river apparently and filled in in the 1800s.

    Great map, thanks for that, really interesting. Even my old house in Grangetown (or most of Grangetown) wasn't built by then.

    Didn't realise the Howells School used to be a 'Female Orphanage'

    I actually did try and read it but failed. Looks like the charity was set up then but the building in the 1800s
