Thread: Sour Grapes?

    Sour Grapes?

    Bristol City manager Nigel Pearson:

"There wasn't much in the game. We conceded two goals from our own possession but we didn't create much. Cardiff might be doing okay but I wouldn't put them up with the best sides at all.

"In our recent games against Leeds, Ipswich are going well, Leicester - they're all games we lost by the odd goal.

"It's a competitive league and if you don't make good decisions on the pitch, sides will turn you over. It's more difficult when you've got a young and inexperienced bench.

"They (Cardiff) have not really created anything in the game. Most of their stuff has come from us turning the ball over.

"No-one here will look at that game and think Cardiff are a really good side compared to Bristol City. I don't think it was a game of a lot of a quality. It was a game with a team in a good seam that capitalised on our mistakes. They didn't outplay us."

    Or is he right?

Colwills goal was from a corner. Does conceding a corner mean from 'our own possession '?

We weren't great and certainly didn't outplay them. There was very little created in open play from either team- the only real bit of quality play led to a shot from Robinson early in the second half. There were a lot of loose passes and poor decision-making from both teams -still, we've won fairly comfortably when not at our best.

    Bizarre comments.

What does that say about his team and management then if he is losing to crap teams like us?

    What a bad loser!

    Re: Sour Grapes?

Wonder what he would have made of our 1-0 win over the wurzels in our second promotion season? From memory, it was an awful game decided by a goal tapped from about five yards out. We had a few similar such games in the 17/18 season when we won while looking nothing like a team on its way to the Premier League, but Pearson has more than enough experience of this league to know it’s often about finding a way to win in the Championship - we’ve played better than that and lost (e.g. Leicester and Ipswich) this season and to use an example from last season, Luton were pretty ordinary in beating us at their place with a very late goal last season.

I thought they had sacked him a few weeks ago.

Seems pretty standard manager speak to me.
He just left out the lessons learnt and robust response bit and you have the full set.

You make some very interesting points, sir.

    Re: Sour Grapes?

Bristol City could with a bit of form be a play off side

But today they got done by a set piece and a bit of genius

    Unlucky

    Naff off home

Zohore, I think. If I'm right it was a bitterly cold afternoon and my testicles didn't thaw for 3 days.

    Re: Sour Grapes?

It was a fairly drab and even game with all the hallmarks of a "grind out a 1-0" to it. BCFC had their moments.

But then up stepped the Boy Wonder.....

    Re: Sour Grapes?

It is sour grapes. He finds it impossible concede that his side were beaten by a better team. The championship is extremely competitive and there won’t be too much in many of the top teams.
He mentions Leeds (we were 2-0 up into the second half), Leic sterling (they beat us in stoppage time), Ipswich (we were 2-0 up after an hour)

Early season issues, it appears to be.

We've scored first in 10 out of 14 Championship fixtures. Leicester are the only side to manage more with 11. We've won 23 points out of 30 from those 10. That's great if we manage that over a whole season.

We've lost every time we've conceded first and have scored fewer equalisers than any other side in the Championship (1 - Rambo vs Leicester).

It seems Pearson has his offfield health problems and his relations with the Bristol City hierarchy could be better

Maybe this had something to do with why he spoke like he did today?

They only beat us in stoppage time because that idiot defender can't defend to save his life. Bulut saw him out of the club soon enough after that.

    Re: Sour Grapes?

There were 15-20 minutes in the 2nd half when City decided that working for a living wasn't such a good idea, but in truth we had the best chances, the most chances, and wasted a load more as the game opened up. Our 1st goal aside, they looked compact and organized and we did look like we were going to struggle, but as the game progressed they took the supporting act.
