As a self confessed Beatles fanatic, there is no doubt it's pretty average but I don't think that's the point of the song. It was about the band, reforming, one last time.
I suspect McCartney In particular wanted to tie up loose ends after an unsatisfactory break up a band that at its peak, was far and away the best the world had seen.
Whether or not he has succeeded only he can tell us.
I think if that was the last we were to hear it was a bit of a damp squid 🦑

Even now the Beatles back catalogue is still being analysed worldwide so I don't think the tracks released after they split up will have any bearing on how they're viewed by future generations.

It is testament to their popularity that 50 years after they split up, the public still want to squeeze every last ounce out of the Beatles phenomenon, so who cares if the 'new' stuff is not up there with Penny Lane or Strawberry Fields.

Loads of Beatles songs are as fresh as the day they were released, only one I can think of where I go ‘Oh no, not this again’ is the repeat at the end of Hey Jude (rest of the song is great though)

Just watched Beatles at the BBC on IPlayer which featured a very unusual edition of Grandstand. Lou Reed may not have rated the British invasion, but when the Beatles returned from launching it on the Ed Sullivan show watched by 73 million, the BBC packed David Coleman, the presenter of Grandstand, off to Heathrow to interview them. Just think about that, the BBC’s main weekend sports programme being disrupted in such a way to present live coverage of a band returning from a trip abroad. That’s what I meant when I said the Beatles didn’t just influence music, they influenced life. They were lucky that they came to fame at a time when the country was crying out for something different, but we won’t see their like again.

One of the reasons why we won't see the like of them was the emergence of mass media

Wether or not they were the greatest ever band is open to debate but they were all over the news , tv , papers and radio at exactly the right time to exploit it all

Aren't most pop songs from the late sixties and early seventies Radio Two material?

    Ten years ago, yes.

I've always enjoyed Pick of the Pops but, as a dance music fan, used to get fed up when they'd have a chart from the 90s and skip over virtually all of the dance stuff, as it was seen as unsuitable for Radio 2 audiences of the time. I'm 45 and the early 90s was my era. I find those over 50 tend to prefer the 80s and don't like 90s dance (in particular).

Apparently the average age of the Radio 2 listener is 35. It's not uncommon to hear 90s dance stuff on Radio 2 now - even Steve Wright had a segment of his Friday afternoon show dedicated to it. I'm not a regular listener, but on the occasions when it goes on in the car, very little of Radio 2's music is pre 80s nowadays.

And that’s why, with a heavy heart, binned Radio 2. Not enough 60s & early 70s. Oh and also Zoe effing Ball,

Thanks for the info about R2 and I'm surprised to hear the average age. I'm not a listener to it myself.

I've no doubt there'll be a time when I'll be too old for Radio 2 as well and I don't mean that in a piss taking way or anything. BBC National radio doesn't do anywhere near enough for older people. I think there's a market for them to have something like a gold station for 60s and 70s music.

I'm more disappointed at the disappearance of all the more unusual shows Radio 2 used to have in the evenings. I remember one dedicated to the organ. Specialist shows that, may not have had great audience figures, but had dedicated followings and were looked forward to.

This is why I said ‘with a heavy heart’. I’m an advocate of the BBC and their catering for all tastes, whether for the many or the few. Good suggestion that, a Gold BBC daytime service. I’ve followed Ken Bruce to Greatest Hits and also tune in to James O’ Brian on LBC but, dear God, those bloody adverts!!!! It’s not something I’m used to after decades of the Beeb.

They are talking about albums not tracks and that was on Setting Sons. I don't think they produced a marquee album, just constantly good ones, but for my five pennyworth there is not much to choose between that, Sound Effects and All Mod Cons but I would just go for the latter!

Yep, All Mod Cons for me but Setting Sons had some stand out tracks, Burning Sky, Little Boy Soldiers and Thick as Thieves

Smithers Jones? The strings-based album version is sublime

Re: The Last Ever Beatles Song

I don't understand why everyone is disappointed with this song. If it had been a real belter, or another 'Yesterday', then it would have been released years ago, back when they were in their prime. Basically it's the last scrape of the barrel, and I don't mean that in a derogatory way - I'm a big fan of the Beatles - but what I mean is, there's nothing left. We've heard everything. And to be honest, with Ringo and Paul in their eighties, this was probably the best time to release it. Any longer, and there'd be no-one left to promote it.

Re: The Last Ever Beatles Song

It may not be up there with classic Beatles tunes but it's not bad and the more I hear it the more I like it. And it's dead easy to play on guitar too.

Amazing, deserved and the best tribute to a great band.

Better than the faked no 1s for Christmas songs and old songs that didn't make it but some felt history needed changing.

Burning Sky is a fantastic song

I think setting sons is the jam at their peak

    A band in total control

His solo stuff was poncey nonsense

I am disappointed with the song because I think it's crap

Like the earlier one it brings nothing to the experience

It was written in the late seventies and probably deemed not good enough to include on Double Fantasy. It's just a throwaway demo of part of a song. I'm surprised they bothered to record it the way they did. McCartney could have added so much more.
