You may well be right as the only thing I am sure on is that it was a cardiff rather than Wales matter.
Then again I really am struggling to actually find anything to back up my memory.

You talking about the one in the early 80s in the old division 3 the nil nil?

Don't remember the train being evil but the welcome along the streets to the ground from Pompey fans was - I remember thinking they all looked like proper men and not many from our escort made any attempts to say hallo

Specials to me were a young person thing and not special at all

That's not quite how I remember it pre-match.

I arrived on a service train packed with City fans. We weren't allowed to exit the station as the football special was arriving minutes later. The police then let us slowly leave the station, and kept us penned in while another service train came in some 15 minutes later, again it was fairly full of City fans.

I remember there were about 15 or so Pompey fans waiting across the road, they soon dispersed once they saw our numbers.
We were marched straight to the ground and not allowed in any pubs. The ground wasn't even open at the time we arrived. Someone spotted an entrance (perhaps a utility entrance) and hundreds of us found ourselves wandering around on the pitch!

No Pompey would have got near us with the numbers we had from the station to the ground.

Yes of course that was it - I had a choice of trains from central and chose the quiet one - pointless have any dialogue with you at all

Agree there was a big away following but the post u was replying to said it was evil - that's not my recollection - yes the clock went etc but Millwall away that season was much worse and the home and away games against Swansea in the Welsh cup final stand out but not Pompey away that season for me

Even Hereford away was worse than Pompey away

I would say the “swots” are the ones on the special.

Millwall away etc we were always on the normal service train as you could quietly go about unrestricted.

That's because your memory is letting you down

It's the biggest train support I have ever been on with city and the Portsmouth fans kept well clear

Well when we went to Millwall in the fa Cup the naughty boys went down on 0625 from Cardiff but came home with us on the special

    Safety in numbers maybe

I'm not talking size of following - already said it was big but didn't think it was particularly evil as you put it and no my memory is not playing tricks - just have a different opinion to you as to the definition of evil.

I was on the special and the Pompey fans were well out of the way when we walked through

Maybe you were with a quiet carriage 🚃......some swots being the phrase

    👍

I was on that special with my Father. I was 10 years old. I can't remember it being scary, and i was quite an alert Nervous kid. I remember a few thuds and bangs on the way out with Pompey fans bricking the train, and the old mans ears pricking up when a group of lads in front of us started talking shite about Combat 18. Thankfully my dad didn't confront them, he would have though if i hadn't been there.

If you were 10 you wouldn't have been aware of aggro and I doubt very much you can remember much if anything at all regarding detail

I was very aware. Where i was sat was pretty standard, routine for a football special. If people had been causing a disturbance i would have remembered it, and my Father would have protected me or moved me away from it. Bristol City was bad, 1989, the toilet was ripped out and thrown out of the window, seats were ripped out etc

    You were 10

I am not doubting you were on the train but you either didn't see it or don't remember or were not aware of bother

There was loads of trouble that day , on the way to the ground , in the ground and on the way back to the station

Just because a ten year old boy can't remember, was too young to understand what was happening or wasn't there when the fans or the police clashed doesn't mean it was all jolly good fun

82 to 84 was when our lot were on the way up and Pompey away was one of the biggest

I haven;t said any of that, I have said that where i was sat on the train there were not any problems. Read what i have written. Whatever happened in other carriages happened, i wasn't there, so can't have an opinion. Deal with what i have said sludge.

You said you were on that train , you were ten and you can't remember it being scary

The second and third points are sort of the key
