Thread: Most iconic goals scored by each of the home countries

Most iconic goals scored by each of the home countries

    In no particular order I would say;

England - Can only be Geoff Hurst's "They think it's all over" hat trick goal in the 1966 World Cup but his 'Russian Linesman' second goal runs it close.

Wales - Look no further than Robson-Kanu's Cruyff turn goal against Belgium

Scotland - Archie Gemmill splitting the Dutch defence in half with a mesmerising dribble in the 1978 World Cup

Northern Ireland - Must be Gerry Armstrong's goal in the 1982 World Cup against the hosts Spain, in which they ended up winning the group.

I can't think of many others that spring to mind. Some better technically of course but more iconic ? Unlikely.

agree with the northern Ireland & Scotland choices

as for wales who could forget Mark Hughes bicycle goal up at the race course and maybe Bellamys goal against Italy at the mill stad

as for England the john Barnes goal against Brazil

Hurst's goal should have been ruled out.

    Commentary should have gone...
"There's some people on the pitch...
Ref stops play until they are cleared...
Ref restarts play with a dropped ball"

Honourable mention for Vokes' goal in that same game and Bale's screamer against Scotland in (I think) 2012

Obviously HRK's is THE goal though

Brian Flynn against the Jocks at Ninian Park in 1975 in the 2-2 draw. It was shown for years afterwards. I think the Jocks were about the loudest crowd I have ever heard that day.

Wales - Kanu in 2016 and before that Ian Rush v Germany
England- Gazza v Scotland in Euro 96
Scotland- Archie Gemmill v Netherlands in 1978
Northern Ireland- Gerry Armstrong v Spain in 82

The bloody, fumble & mishit by Pele in 1958 led to a Brazilian golden era. John Charles doesn’t get assaulted out of the World Cup by the Hungarians, we go on and win the World Cup, and 1966 is shoved straight up their arses!!! So, yeah, that Pele scramble was Brazil’s iconic goal. And I don’t give a shite that it was a goal by a Home Countries side

I’d go for the third England goal in 1966, without that the fourth isn’t scored.

I wouldn’t pick Gemmill’s for Scotland because it counted for nothing in the end - the Joe Jordan penalty had more relevance.

Agree about Armstrong’s goal against Spain.

As for Wales, although it didn’t count for much, so by my earlier logic, I shouldn’t pick it, I’m going to say Ian Rush’s to beat Germany in 1991 when they were World Champions.
