Manager Erol Bulut believes Cardiff City need January signings to maintain their Championship play-off push.

Cardiff are two points outside the top six going into Friday's visit of leaders Leicester City.

Owner Vincent Tan has hinted there will be money available to strengthen the Bluebirds squad next month.

"I think our owner Vincent Tan knows from our chairman (Mehmet Dalman) what we have to do, because I had talks with our chairman," Bulut said.

"These are only good things for Cardiff City. I am asking for players [who can help] push a little bit more, or stay in the level we are in right now."

During the January 2024 window, Cardiff will be allowed to pay fees for players for the first time since 2022 following a transfer embargo.

The Welsh club were placed under an EFL embargo because they defaulted on payment of the transfer fee for the late Emiliano Sala.

Cardiff have taken four points from their last two games having suffered five defeats in their previous seven second-tier outings.

Former Fenerbahce boss Bulut, who is in his first season in English football, believes the second half of the campaign will be more challenging for his team.

"We are only two points away from the play-offs. I said always we want to be around there," Bulut added.

"But the second part of the season will be more difficult in my opinion, so we have to do something.

"The last four or five games, we have seen we need to add players. We have to add some players to push for a little bit more.

"If we can do something it will be great; if not, I have to manage with the team until the end of the season.

"But he [Tan] understood that we have to do something on the market and I hope he can help us with this."

Cardiff hope Kion Etete will be fit to face Leicester despite a hamstring problem which saw him withdrawn midway through the second half in the 2-2 draw with Plymouth Argyle on 26 December.

Leicester are six points clear at the top of the table having lost only three league games all season.

"They are a high-quality team - they were relegated last season and they kept nearly all the players," Bulut said.

"The first game when we played over there [in August], we could win the game. At 1-1 we had chances to score the second goal, then 90 plus two minutes, we lost the game. This is football."

No matter who we sign, we would be slaughtered in the Premier League next season if we were to be promoted via the play-offs!

Indeed we would, but I don't think that's something we need to concern ourselves with. The signings Bulut makes are more likely to be for next season as well, althotin the unlikely, impossible event of us gaining promotion then I'd take it all day long and twice in a Sunday.

You never know, we were close to survival the last time.

Doubt if all this season’s lads would be involved should we go up. There’d be new signings in the summer, no club in their right mind would turn their nose up at promotion.

We were also a far better side than we are now.

I would have said the same about Luton but with a few shrewd acquisitions this season, they have become very competitive. And I think their team is improving all the time, so it's never a given how a team will perform in a higher league.
