Bored out of my box, I thought I'd have a look back at our previous promotion winning seasons and see how this season compares to the others.

In order to make a comparison, I've recalculated all seasons so that a win awards 3 points.

In terms of points won with 7 games to go, we've never had as many as we have this season. That's quite misleading, however. In 1946/47, we played only 42 games in a season and had what would now be worth 78 points with 7 games to go. Under 3 points for a win, we would have finished with 96 points, which would have been a clear club record. Probably the best comparison to make would be to calculate our points per game average with 7 games to go.

In short, this (so far) is the third best season in our history in terms of points won per game at this point and (only by a fraction) our second best season ever at this level. Our Championship winning side of five years ago is fourth (or third at this level). I think that shows what a fantastic effort we've seen so far this season.

(Season, ppg average)

1946/47 2.23
1959/60 2.06
2017/18 2.05
2012/13 2.00
1992/93 1.91
2000/01 1.90
1920/21 1.89
2002/03 1.87
1998/99 1.79
1982/83 1.77
1987/88 1.72
1975/76 1.59
1951/52 1.57

It might be interesting to know that we've only ever averaged 2 points a game over the course of the entire season once - back in 1946/47 in Division 3 (South). That season we averaged a massive 2.26 points a game (converted into 3 points for a win) and would have finished with 105 points over the course of a 46 game season. Currently our 1992/93 promotion winners hold the second best promotion record in terms of points won on average per game; Malky's table toppers lie 5th best overall. 4 wins this season would see us with a 2 points a game average over the course of a season and ensure this Cardiff City side has had the 2nd best points per game haulage in our history.

Here's the end of season points averages:
