I use Spotify. You can stream music on it (via PC, mac, mobile) for free.
free - has adverts, lower quality, stream only
paid - £10 per month, online and offline, no ads, quality that is like Google Play/iTunes

A friend tells me that he would like to freshen his music library up, but is frustrated to have this pest following him all around the interweb

Does anyone know where the youth of today get their music from these days? TIA

Also, the laws around downloading illegally are, at some point, going to be totally relaxed. You'll get warning letters, but that's as far as they're going to go with it.
The letters basically just try to encourage you to pay for media, not steal it, rather than threaten you.
Go to youtube, find the track you want and paste the link into this website and rip the mp3 track. I use it a lot cos I like live versions of my favourite tracks. Just make sure the video you are ripping from is decent quality, not someone filming a gig on a phone
