The nexus 6 phone is good.
I have the second gen Nexus 7 2013 model. Still really good. Though as it's 3 years old I would have thought there were better option out there for your money.
Still regularly in the top 10 smaller tablets, now the oldest on the list, but also the cheapest.

Having a 10" tablet in the house aswell I would recommend a 7" tablet.

Google Pixel C if you're looking for a top range Android tablet.
Whilst there may be some Apple hate, the iPad is still the best all round tablet although I recently had test of the new Microsoft Surface pro which was hugely impressive and worth checking out if your willing to spend top dollar.
Have a look at the Xperia range of tablets. I have the 8" and the 10" - superb bits of kit. And as an added bonus for you Mr Sludge they are waterproof so easily wipe clean ;-)
Having bought a Samsung Galaxy E 10 inch recently for 150 just for web use ,I would suggest that you reaserch what connections you have or need . I think my next buy will ensure its has USB 3 port for speed, and most importantly a HDMI port for TV link up.
I got one of these a week ago http://www.amazon.co.uk/Z580CA-1A031...Android+5.0%29
It's great, but the price is now £15 more
