Thread: Misunderstood lyrics

    Re: Misunderstood lyrics

There is a term for this phenomenon, and it is a 'Ladymondegreen', after someone thought that was the line when it actually said 'laid him on the green'.

For years as a kid I sang 'Bumbading Badonna' to the opening line of UB40's Ivory Madonna

I also made up a word to fit the Stranglers classic 'Golden Brown' with the line 'with my mansheerun'. A relative of Ed Sheeran perhaps? I looked up the real lyric a few years ago.

A more recent one I had debunked by my GF was my decades long belief that Feargal Sharkey sang 'A good heart it says is hard to find'.

Although revenge was mine the other day when I explained that Wham sang 'Fun and sunshine, there's enough for everyone, all that's missing is the sea' but she had always just mumbled nonsense to fill that last bit.

They were plain old eggplants back then, before the divisive rebrand.

Another ABBA one - I remember thinking the first line from verse one of Super Trouper was:
I was sick and tired of everything
when I called you last night from Tesco

They were sold on the outdoor market on the Hayes in the late sixties/1970. My brother was amused by them and brought one home. He told me that it was an 'ormagee' (as he understood it from the stall holder) and included images of it in his cartoons.

Taylor Swift sings in one of her songs about 'Starbucks lovers', in Blank Space. Don't know what the real lyric is, it's not Starbucks though.

I thought the same when I first heard it and had to Google to find out what it was on about. Turns out that it's very common to hear Starbucks lovers.

It's really something like a big list of ex lovers, but she changes the vowel sound in 'of' to 'are-v'.

Misunderstood lyrics that you (or somebody you know) has actually sung - aloud or just in your head.

Got any howlers that you want to admit to?!

I always though the operatic bit in Bohemian Rhapsody went: "Beelzebub's put a telephone aside for me"

Go on - post your worst mistakes

    Re: Misunderstood lyrics

Another one came to me -
I remember having a holiday job in a hotel kitchen as a lad and one of the chefs used to like to sing very theatrically and loudly in a laaahd cockney voice while he worked.
A particular favourite of his being Bowie.

Ziggy Stardust developed some kind of Attenborough-esque theme:
"Like a Leopard Messiah" ' and "makin' luv to his eagle", "while the flies tried to break our bowls"

Most lines delivered with a pwopah Cockney flourish-aaaah at the end.
    Happy times ;)

R.E.M. song "The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite"

    I thought the lyrics
"Call me when you try to wake her up, call me when you try to wake her" were

"Calling Cheryl Baker, calling Cheryl Baker"

A couple of Queen ones -

Down in the dungeon with Peters and Lee (Now I'm here)

She keeps a mower and shotgun in a pretty cabinet (Killer Queen)

    I like this one

There's a bathroom on the right (Bad Moon Rising)
