Was there ever a Northern Soul club in Cardiff? There seemed to be quite a big scooter-boy/mod scene back in the day.

Hi Folks, just thought I'd mention this great Northern Soul Night coming up at The Globe, Albany Road, Cardiff, this coming Saturday 14th Jan. The band are playing live with local guest DJ's spinning classic Northern Soul sounds on vinyl. Great way to celebrate us beating the wurzels, by getting your dancing shoes on, and cutting a few shapes on the dancefloor in the evening
Seen them many times live at Scooter Rallies, Northern Soul weekenders etc. Got to say they are the best Northern Soul Band out there.
Tickets are a tenner, either on the door, or via see.com
Sludge, get your dancing shoes on, get that Fred Perry outta the wardrobe, wash and iron your Levi's, and get ready to do some backflips and somersaults. None of this 'eavy metal trash you normally listen too lol!

Northern Soul is a phrase coined by writer Dave Godin in 1970, when he noticed football fans from northern England asking for old-fashioned, fast-tempo soul records in his London shop.
Dave Godin was an amazing man - and a friend of mine. He ran the Anvil cinema in Sheffield for decades and apart from his love of music (Northern Soul in particular) was a unique and passionate campaigner for a wide range of causes. Sadly missed.

There was an excellent documentary on BBC 4 about Northern Soul last summer;-

Must admit it passed me by somewhat at the time and thought cash in crap like this was representative of it - I was wrong;-

Thanks for sharing Jon.
I'll enjoy reading those today.
if I had a time-travel wish it would mid 70's and I would be a young man, standing in the queue of the Twisted Wheel, or the Mecca, or Wigan Casino, in my baggies and vest-top and Robin Friday hair - with my blood pumping un-naturally fast.
Just for one night
Cheers. So busy out playing most of the time back then and not taking much notice of the DJs spiel in between records I obviously missed the terms.
Great music though and I certainly enjoyed the soul bands that used to play in the docks and the Inn on the river.
Good that Mr Soul is posting this stuff, might well shuffle on down to one of the venues
^^ Inn on the River (Pub on the Mud!) some great music and times in there
In the 70s there were a few bods from Blackwood and a few from Porthcawl I was the only one from merthyr that would travel to Wigan casino, there was a coach that was run from Porthcawl Blackwood Gloucester and on to the casino.
There was another club called Stars & stripes in Yate just outside Bristol which was a fantastic northern soul night.
The 80's a kid called Mark Payne ran nights at the Manot suite in Porthcawl mark sadly died 1990 and the rest is now folklore.

Wigan Casino was a bit before my time. However, two Northern Soulies who made those coach journeys up to Wigan Casino back in the day, Al Kent from Blackwood, and Dai Bater from Pencoed will be at The Globe tomorrow night.
There were some excellent Northern Soul Nights run at The Pavillion by a local guy, Nigel Graham, until October 2015. Sadly, they have ended
Even " The Goodies " tapped into Northern Soul with " Black pudding Bertha , the Queen of Northern Soul "
although unlike the other two Bill Oddie was from Rochdale.
[QUOTE=Mr Soul '68;4710204]Yep your right Al Kent and Nigel graham took over the Porthcawl scene after mark died. Tell them Brick says hello.
Steve strange was on the coach as well. The only thing that puts cardiff and northern soul together is we used to meet a West Indian guy in the Lexington And he would serve us up a 1000 blues so in its way it played a big part...lol

growing up on motown made an appreciation of northern soul just that much easier
Really enjoyed that, great band, good to see the real dancers strutting their stuff. Went to the Bristol game earlier, all in all a great day.
