Of the club's seven summer signings, I think I'm right in saying that Tomlin is the one who was playing for the team that finished highest in the Football League pyramid last season:

Tomlin - Bristol City - 17th in the Championship
Camp - Rotherham United - 24th in the Championship
Ward - Rotherham United - 24th in the Championship
    Mendez-Laing - Rochdale - 9th in League One
Etheridge - Walsall - 14th in League One
Paterson - Hearts - 5th in the Scottish Premiership
    Damour - Bourg-Peronnas - 15th in the French Ligue 2
Paterson clearly the lowest out of that lot

With a manager whose man management skills are off the charts.

I'd say like all transfers it's a risk but a hell of a lot lower risk with Warnock in charge than any other manager.

I know we all see football differently but i have read from quite a lot of posters i respect that they are basically underwhelmed by our transfer activity but i fail to understand this.

As J R Hartley said in his post above we have a very competitive squad now.

We have true competition for places in every position on the field. When was the last time we could say that?

We have bags of pace throughout the team.

We have leaders in Morrison, Bamba, Gunnarsson, Peltier.

We have height and power at set pieces.

We’ve replaced Whitts dead ball skills with Tomlin and he'll also be able to go past a man and pick out the strikers runs.

We have a good mix of youth and experience.

Danny Ward is a very good player who will compliment Zohore well. He’s an intelligent player with a cute touch as well as an eye for goal.

I know people think Damour is just a squad player but i think he'll be far more than that (time will tell i guess)

Patterson was being touted for a 3million+ move to West Ham before he got injured.

We have 3 goalkeepers now whereas on the eve of last season we had none!

Manga, Hoilett and Harris all signed new contracts which is something i have never witnessed as a Cardiff fan.

Mendez-Laing will keep Hoilett and Harris battling for their places.

The other potential plusses are we dont know what Saadi and Fred can bring to the table.

    Kennedy may take his chance.

And finally we have Kenneth Zohore (boom)

I think we'll definitely challenge the play offs
Fair dos I am going to print this post off and read it when I am down 're my beloved CCFC - can't disagree with a word you say there and despite my glass is half empty post from earlier I am seriously looking forward to this season but even more so now because of your positivity.

Where do you sit in the ground cos I may well stalk you 🙌😁

Quite right. It's almost on a par with the Luxembourg top flight.

    Damour - Bourg-Peronnas - 15th in the French Ligue 2
Mark Hudson - relegated with Charlton
David Marshall - relegated with Norwich

I'd say these were two of our best signings of recent years.

I think we have a really decent starting 11 now (keeper weakest link) but not sure we have the squad just yet - an injury to Zohore and/or ralls or Gunnar and we might be struggling.

Celtic aside, yes it probably is!

I don't think people realise how far and how fast the decline in Scottish football has been.

If you don't consider Celtic the French ligue 2 teams probably operate with bigger budgets and have higher wage bills.

CM - Gunnarson, Ralls, Damour, Halford,

AM / Wingers - Tomlin, Hoilett, K. Harris, Mendez Laing, Pilkington, M.Harris.

Forwards - Big Ken, Ward, Saadi, Healey,

Several players in all areas of the field can cover a number of positions.

Ive left out John, O Keefe, Noone, Kennedy and Fred as clearly they are not part of Warnocks plans. Obviousl if Pilkington and Saadi are moved on I think we would need to bring replacements in or those positions as they are a little threadbare.

Being picky id like someonelse in CM who can pass the ball but its quite a competetive squad.
ENJOYED reading that we certainly have a stronger squad now.
I'm quite confidant certainly more so than the last few seasons
and more options too and finally we have pace lol
    I'm not gong to predict
    cmon city

Colin's definetly got a better chance of getting a tune out of him than Lee Johnson I agree.

On our budget I guess we needed to gamble

Judging by TLG's recent posts, i think his absence from football has caused him to forget that a football team is made up of 11 players!

George Best must have been shit cos Northern Ireland never won the world cup!

Great thread. Feeling positive, can't wait to see how we stack up.

Looked a good signing until I saw the price. £3m for that? If you're spending a lot of money on one player in the summer then he should be the one that you build a team around. You can't build a team around an inconsistent player.

A fee that could rise to 2.9 million is being quoted.
That will be if we get promoted and he scores 10 goals, plays 46 games etc.

I'd suggest the fee is about 2 million

We should have kept the £3.5m Joe Mason then and built round him.

There's a lot of pressure on Ralls and Gunnar, or he must really rate Damour. I'd like to see us sign Ndoye or Ledley, just to give us someone a bit different in the middle of the park. The current ones are a bit one dimensional.

I also think we'll keep Pilks (presumably as we can't find a buyer) but he's a good technical player than can play wide, in behind and up top to a decent level.

Strange comment. Selling Mason was good business at that price, it doesn't justify the "up to" £3m spent on Tomlin.

Cunning, because he could be dropped for the last game, won't get 10 league goals, and there'll be no promotion.

I'd like to think WJ99 was joking, at least I hope so! Tomlin is a top player, Mason is too slow and weak.

When Malky took over in the summer of 2011, we were left with a shell of a team with loan players returning and others being sold. Our transfer record that summer wasn't all that different:

Craig Conway - Dundee Utd - 4th SPL
    Don Cowie - Watford - 14th Championship
    Aron Gunnarsson - Coventry - 18th Championship
    Andrew Taylor - Middlesbro - 12th Championship
Joe Mason - Plymouth - 23rd League One
Robert Earnshaw - Nottm Forest - 6th Championship
Kenny Miller - Bursaspor - 3rd Turkish Super Lig
    Rudy Gestede - Metz - 17th French Ligue 2
    Ben Turner - Coventry - 18th Championship

That didn't turn out too badly!
