I think that's right though I'm not sure he scored for Newcastle against City - only for Sunderland in 1978.

Regarding Clarke, I used a Newcastle fans' site to get that info, but, thinking about it, Ray Clarke, who scored stacks of goals for Mansfield in the 70s, had a short spell at Newcastle and so it may have been him - Wikipedia says he left them in 1981 though and this game was played in February 1982.

I think Trewick and Varadi scores for Newcastle in that Feb 82 meeting. Clarke wasn’t in the Newcastle side that day.

It was Jeff Clarke that was described, but Ray Clarke did indeed score against City in 80/81 (6 Sept). The Feb 82 meeting had Varadi and Trewick as scorers as mentioned above. Jeff Clarke didn't join Newcastle until summer of 1982 and Ray Clarke left at end of 80/81.

The Newcastle website I used to set the question had Clarke and Varadi as scorers and had Clarke down as playing in defence - of course, I can't find it again now!
