Indeed. I don't recall too many City fans complaining about buying success when the club won the Championship following the re-brand. In fact, once things had turned sour for Malky Mackay, many City supporters continually belittled his achievements by claiming most managers could have got promoted with the money he was given to spend.

Or when when Sam was splashing out and putting the clubs future at risk.

At least there was no in crowd of supporters out socialising with Tan.

Malky did a brilliant job. Im not sure but i doubt we were the biggest spenders that season. Regulars Marshall Taylor Hudson Turner Cowie Gunner Helgusson. Hardly big signings.

Id say pound for pound ludicrous prices for Thorne Prior etc were far worse.

I've always believed Mackay did a very good job, but plenty claim his football was boring and he couldn't fail in the Championship with the money that was made available to him.

Its funny how things have changed, we "bought the league" by spending £10m that season. Now that would barely get you a proven striker

The way that season is regarded in retrospect by many Cardiff City supporters is baffling to me. I hated what was happening at the club at the time, but nevertheless I thought Mackay had done an excellent job without spending silly money. Sure, he was able to build a decent squad by Championship standards and without Tan's money he would have struggled to bring in the players he did, but he didn't appear to have spent that much. However, the view among many City fans now seems to be that promotion was inevitable given the resources he had available to him.

One thing's for sure, though - nobody who was supporting the club in 2012/13 was complaining about football club owners spending money the club hadn't earned back then.

Its just revisionism by people following the whole Corenlius saga

We never spent that much and it was a good example of spending money in the right areas, it wasn't the scatter gun approach that many have taken in the Championship, including ourselves

Spot on. I think there was the realisation that the squad from 2011/12 had overachieved in some respects and needed the addition of a bit more quality to make the push for the PL. That's how I've always seen it.
