This talk of the North tower collapsing is surely bollocks. It's made of stone.

The stone will not literally burn but the fire and the heat will destroy the integrity of the mortar binding it together and fire can make the stone brittle and then it can crumble. If the fire get a hold inside the tower it can very easily fall. Then again it could well stand, but nothing is certain.

Haven't seen much of the news over the past hour or so, but did that place have
    a sprinkler system?

I doubt it, but it would appear the fire may have started above the level they would have been at anyway.

There is a live feed on BBC, and they are pouring water into the tower. I dread to think what damage it is doing. The vaults and the crypt hold some fantastic treasures..

    Re: Notre Dame

It’ll be partially damaged but will be renovated to such a high spec that it’ll be unnoticeable.

Restoration people are insanely meticulous and will source the exact same material as the original, hiring the most skilled masons and carpenters the world has to offer.

It’s a spectacular news story but nothing that can’t be fixed with lots of time and money.

They should burn a few more Catholic churches down.
The priesthood is full of child abusers.
Perhaps it's Jesus venting his anger

I'm an atheist but, like most people, recognise the incredible architecture involved in the construction of religious buildings all round the world. On the other hand, there is the Taliban approach....

Terrible, but it will be rebuilt and restored and we wont even be able to tell the difference.
This fire will be part of its incredible history.

How can new masonry, timberwork and artwork replace that which was centuries older? I can't see it being the same myself.

It’s a bit like Triggers broom he had for 15 yrs. 😂
On a more serious note, the most wondrous thing for me about Notre Dame, as with many older iconic buildings all over the world, is how people over 800yrs ago, managed to build such stunning, high buildings with limited resources.

Definitely a ‘turn the clock back’ thing. Would be amazing to stand back and watch the workers of that time grafting away at such heights yet maintaining the intricacies and standards that have enabled such buildings to withstand everything for centuries.

Ken Follett (Cardiff author)'s most famous novel is Pillars Of The Earth, the construction of a cathedral in an English city in the 12th century. It's a good read.

Sorry but it was just a useless religeous building. I would have been more upset if a house in Wales had burned down and left a family homeless.

Art, architecture, history and human creativity matter a lot to a great many people. Lost on others, obviously.

No need to stop at catholic churches. There are child abusers in power in all religious sects. While we're at it, we should burn down a few scout halls and football grounds for the same reason.
